I currently run a GT3071 .63. The car has been dyno'd at 420hp, so not too shabby, but having now just had a potentially expensive look on 034motorsport's website for the first time in months, I've noticed that they're selling Precision turbos, this one in particular: http://www.034motorsport.com/turboch...l-p-20077.html Can the stats be true: quicker spool than a GT3071, but GT3076 power? What's the catch?
Yeah I wasn't planning on swapping turbos. Even the GT3071 isn't great for traffic light starts, so with the Precision claiming better spool, I thought 'great'. Maybe I will give it a miss.....maybe.
i doubt you would get any better spool with it. maybe better power than the 3076 would and slightly better spool than the 3076 presumably, but i dont think it would get much.
if you are going to do it instead of a 3076, i would try it. But i wouldnt go for 0.63ar because those turbos give so much more on high end revs which is a shame to get them struggled at the top.
The GT3071 is good, it has savage midrange, even in a big old lump like the S6, the car shifts big style. I have the .63 and at 6.5k that's it, no more power. Which in 6th still equates to 165mph (on a closed road). And if I changed the turbo, I'd need a Wagner EM, and then probably the head ported etc etc, so a lot of investment. I've had 5k trouble free miles, so maybe best not to try my luck, but if I do decide to take the plunge (what's wrong with living just on beans for a year?), then I will start a post.
i think compressor is 55/76 and turbine inducer is 57 but i dont know the exducer. Apparently they have a different wheel design though, as well as the billet option.
I experienced the GT3071R turbo as a real on/off turbo. Low down not really much is happening, until you hit 2800 RPM and all of a sudden the turbo pressure is build to full boost at 3300 RPM. Really neck snapping. It remains like this till 6500 RPM when you have to taper it off again, so indeed a very strong mid-range turbo.
With the CT355 the build up of turbo pressure happened in the lower revves about 400 rpm earlier and more gradually until it becomes savage at 3300-3400 RPM. The CT355 keeps pushing until red-line on full boost, like I have never experienced with any other turbo I had. So the power band delivery is more smooth and much wider in my experience.
Both the GT3071R and CT355 where BB and 0.63AR turbo's. Off course the mapping of the car has something to do with it, but since I used a manual boost controller on my CT355 I think the character of the CT355 is really different, as the GT3071R was not able to boost up at the lower revves as we tried with Motronic.
I can imagine the latest technology of Precision Turbos can give you also this smoother power delivery, compared to the on/off GT3071R.
It's all a matter of preference and how well you or your tuner can map the setup.
I know about to guys with precision turbos. Flemming alm and marius solheim is running precision turbos. I am going to use a precision turbo with a 65mm billet wheel
After what I've seen and read, my money goes on Presicion Turbos, no matter what the application.
Its all down to prioritizing, but if its worth the extra cost for a switch compared to the (small/big?) extra gain, that's really much up to yourself to decide.
As I understand, its the billet turbine wheels (and their blade shape setup) that makes the most of the diffrence. Don't know anything about their CHRA's compared to others though.
I seem to recall FP doing a upgrade on 3071r turbos (billett wheels), but did not find anything on their website now. Maybe they discontinued that upgrade option leaving only the FP 3076 upgrade left?
If you got the extra money to do the swap, do it. I would.
