If you want to use a vr6 go ahead and do it, Vr6 longterm are an awful engine to own in comparison to the bullet proof I5
If you then begin talking about the 3.2 R32 engine which is not referred to plainly as the "VR6" in the UK btw then you have a better power base to use which can make good power when supercharged or turbo charged same goes for the 3.6 versionsComment

The cam belt tensioner? Every chain driven motor that exists uses a "plastic" slider for the gears. They do break, but in 100k mile intervals. That is like hating on the I520v because the stupid belt thing breaks and bends all your intake valves on 160hp motors. I think the 12v VR6 gets a bad reputation because they are not maintained. Picture who drives 12v vr6 jetta's and golfs and who drives 20vt vehicles like the s2, s4, s6, RR or SQ. I think the latter is more likely to change oil in regular intervals, do belts often, or stop driving the thing if it sounds like marbles are bouncing around. For every 400k miles s2 there is a 400k mile mk3 Jetta running around.
And Jamo, the r32/r36 motors are sweet out of the box. THey do suffer from thinned out cylinder walls that result in cracked bores when the power is elevated to around 700whp. For this reason, the ticket is to get a 24v bottom end that came in 2.8L variations, and bore them out to 2.9L or 3.0L and then use the r32 head which has HUGE ports and valves compared to the standard 24v head. This is all pretty expensive though, as the r32 head fetches premium dollars, and the built bottom end is just as expensive as any other bottom end. That setup is capable of over 1000whp as the boys over in Fremont California explored.
Look, people can hate on the vr6 all they want. I was kindof torqued off when I realized this thread had been locked yesterday. People for whatever reason associate the vw/audi joint venture of hte vr6 in another world. Every VR6 part has audi rings on it.
To say that the s2 forums should only be about i520vt is about stupid. THere used to be a place called 20v.org. I could see them getting their panties in a bunch over vr6 talk, but come now. There are killer SQ threads, RR/URQ threads, urS car threads and the occasional b5 s4 thread. Is there not a 5 page thread on a c5 rs6 or a e39m5? Did people not like hte e39M5 because it is a sweet piece of machinery? I am a car guy, and thats why I love hte e39m5. For the same reason, I can appreciate vr swaps like this one..

actually like hank mentioned below the r32 isnt the best starting turbo platform, its the same block as the 2.8L but with much thinner cylinder walls, the hot ticket build is r32 head that flows a ton and the bullet proff 2.8L bottom end with thick strong cylinder wallsIf you want to use a vr6 go ahead and do it, Vr6 longterm are an awful engine to own in comparison to the bullet proof I5

thanks hank, I appreciate the support
I def agree n the vr golf people, ahha they just drive, never change oil, belts etc they drive til it breaks down on the side of the road, they are typically teenagers and beater/commuter cars ahaha
Yeah the 2.8L bottom end and r32 head gives you the flow and strength to make big numbers and not break.
I too was quite angry when it was locked, im glad it open again and we will keep it clean.
Think outside the box guys, would you be equally wound up if I put a 4.2fsi rs4 motor in the cq? That has all sorts of carbon issues etc, as allmotors have some reengineering to be done, that’s part of the challenge of making something uniqueBEAST '90 CQ 24v VRT / O1E / v8 rear, HOLSET SUPER 40 http://www.theprojectpad.com/viewtop...1&t=193#p37887

Interesting info on the blocks, The r32 is the flavour of the month in v6 terms for conversions with a lot of twin turbo conversions and a lot of broken chains..The cam belt tensioner? When I had my exhaust done one was being rebuilt in the shop, common complaint.
VR6 had it's day as engine of the time in the 90's to be honest in the U.K, now the 1.8t is the engine of choice for many conversions leaving the VR6's behind
Personally I can't see the gain of the VR6 over the I5 but then I do have a stroker engine
Mainly it's VW you will see use the Vr6's variants in the cars, just the way things have gone down over the yearsComment

yeah jamo i see where youre coming from, the 1.8ts are great light little poweful motors, they too have their issues, timing belts/tensioners/ water pump etc 20vt i4 vs 20vt i5
both snapping belts and killing cylinder heads
a lot of the vr appeal is its displacement relative to the size of the motors physical dimensions
i think if they were as readily availible to you as they are to us, then you would see more people working with them and pushing their limitsBEAST '90 CQ 24v VRT / O1E / v8 rear, HOLSET SUPER 40 http://www.theprojectpad.com/viewtop...1&t=193#p37887
