Electric Supercharger has anybody tried it

The theory of electricaly operated fans to provide boost is absolutely sound and makes sense.
The practicality of it is very limited. Although i would be suprised if no one is experimenting with this system tied in alternator switchers or what ever they are called (disconect the alternator at WOT). Or Bleed storage systems like a pressure accumulator for boost rather than oil.
yes It does work, apparently. but not in the form of some ****** PC fan in the inlet tract.
There is a guy with a Mazda i think, and he's built an electric supercharger out of 3 BIG starter motors bolted and geared up to an Eton super charger.
The energy required to turn the charger still comes from the same place, 'the engine' but instead of that energy being transferred 'physically' by a belt on the engine via a pully, the energy is supplied instead by electricity via a dyno and cables.
Theoretically, the electric powered Eton can supply as little or as much boost as required 'instantly' and at any RPM. The great thing about electric motors is they can supply all of there available torque from the moment you give them power.
The hard part is designing an electronic control system to correctly supply the right amount of fuel and the right amount of electrically forced boost at any given time. simples.
The guy who's done it tho, said it gave him instant boost literally at the flip of a switch.. And so far hes only blown up one engine! lol
But thats only because an effective control system needs to be developed.
Its a shame no one has really tried to make it work.
I think there's potential here. You just nee proper motors driving a proper supercharger. & non of this computer fan crap!.C4 A6 AEL avant quattro: daily

You want to be rid of lag? Nic Mann knows the way! I like to call his system "turbine charging" ...uses an external combustion chamber to turn the turbo into something akin to a jet engine, so it runs at whatever speed you like regardless of the exhaust gases exiting the engine. On the downside, it does need to be started up with an APU...Martin Cutting

I'm not sure about the guy that did it , but it sounds like he had enough power , years ago someone worked out how much power it would take to compress air to 15 psi flowing at 100 litres per second , a cant remember the figure but in electrical current at 12v it was about 600 amps . The fact
that this guy used 3 starter motors sounds about right but ,think about it, starter motors would not last long before they melt and as for your submarine battery you would need so the battery doesn't go flat in 30 seconds or 800 amp alternator draining about 12hp from the crank to keep up it just is not realistic .
There has been some research done into a system that works and it uses a small electric motor .
The system worked the same way a 100 ton press works , there is a small electric motor that accelerates a heavy flywheel slowly up to speed . The flywheel then contains lots of energy , in the turbo this is done without compressing any air ( in recirculation mode ) as the motor would not be able to accelerate the turbo shaft / flywheel assembly if it was trying to compress air .
The idea is that when you start the car the motor would accelerate the turbo shaft flywheel assembly
over a period of about 60 seconds to about 100 000 rpm . Then there is sufficient energy stored in the flywheel to compress the air entering the engine for 5 seconds or so , just enough time for the engine to make good power and the turbine to take over and drive the turbo in the normal way .
The system obvious had a lot of disadvantages and was complicated in terms of control systems
and as far as I know was abandoned ! Considering that this was done by one of the biggest turbo manufactures and still was abandoned just about says it all .
Then there is the hybrid turbo , you can read about this in this link , but the fact that it can make a whopping 7hp on a 2 litre engine will definitely fail to thrill anyone .

agree with the above..
re the hp drain on the engine, its normal for belt driven Superchargers to cause a horse power penalty from the engine, anyway. when compared to exhaust driven compressors they aren't as efficient because of this, and usually make less power than a turbo.
I'm sure they loose 30+hp or maybe more
.. i'm not sure. but the point is they make it back, and plenty more in return.
As for the amount of electrical power you need, there are cars such as the prius, so called 'Hybrids' that carry plenty of electricity, an efficient electrical motor, as well as a petrol engine all in one package.
Why not simply put a powerful petrol engine in there instead, and use the copious energy reserves in the batterys to drive a compressor? :mischeif:
I think we need to fit a prius with an I5 and put the cars electric motor to some good use!

Now THATS the kind of hybrid I want to see.

And no one forget the AUDI E-TRON, its all electric, AWD and lots and lots of torque , just need to combine it with an I5
I think the tec needed is available today.. engineers just need to think differently about how they could be making use of it.

I'd use the Nitros Oxide too
Or copy the old group B design for turbo and supercharger
Was it Lancia or Pug? Can t remember
Or stick an LS9 engine in it and a Paxton on top and have done with fragile engines compared to the V8Comment

Just get an air compressor and plumb it in to your inlet and fire a load of compressed air through it on WOT.
Or put an extra 5 injectors on your exhaust manifold and see what happens (i would stand back if i were you)
I wish i had the money to waste trying stupid stuff like this.Comment
