I had a HX40 with a machined K26 6 housing and i was very pleased with it. In my new setup i am going to try a HX35 with a 16^ holset housing.

here is an interesting read on the GS-Racing site:
BB turbos spool up FASTER than otherwise identical plain bearing versions- FACT. That may seem an odd thing to say considering the title, and it's what all BB turbo sellers will tell you, but it's a clever play on words hiding the realities, so, lets do a little digging, and get to the truth.
The type of bearing does NOT affect at what rpm the turbo begins to come on boost, not at ALL. Thats the biggest thing they dont mention. People hear the word "spool" and suddently think a BB turbo will come on boost at half the rpm of an otherwise identical one with a plain bearing. Wrong. No difference at all.
What a BB turbo WILL do is go from say 1psi to full boost faster than a plain bearing turbo once in the boost threshold (the boost threshold is the rpm level where you put your foot down, and it comes on boost, as all engines have an area low in the rev range where it doesnt boost at all), but even according to the biggest promoter of them, Garrett, its only 15% faster, FIFTEEN PERCENT, thats, well, hardly noticable. Think about it, your at 4500rpm, you put your foot down, how long does it take to hit full boost? Blink of an eye? Maybe a second or even two if your car's really laggy. How much has spending maybe double the money buying a BB core turbo gained you? Yup, 15% of one or two seconds, thats less than a blink of an eye, certainly nothing a human being would really notice, and nothing that would make a dent on a performance time.

Dont get us wrong, if money was no issue and we wanted the perfect car, we would say BB all the way, but unless we all win the lottery (and then im sure we wont be worrying about this!) money is an issue, and paying an extra 500 quid for something you wont even feel, just because the salesman told you its good, is frankly ridiculous when there are SO many more effective ways to improve your performance or indeed, increase spoolup speed.

Wheel size and type (compressor and turbine), turbine housing a/r, exhaust gas temperature, turbine housing style, and much more all can make a HUGE difference to when and how your car spools up, much much more than what a BB core will do, and usually much cheaper too.

Basically, dont worry what core it has, worry it is the best specced turbo for your application (ie not the huge a/r old junk at the top of this page, for example!).
    Go Holset or Go RS4

that is partially true what they say, but honestly, holset needs a manufacturer of good turbine housings to put them on the market to cover most needs. obviously with most cars being 4/6 cyls using a divided housing is ok, but for us is a compromise.

by the way, im not sure but i think the garrett is building up more boost and torque when off boost when i compare it to the holset. For example at 0.3bar on 3000rpm on 6th gear, the car feels faster now than when i had the holset and also the holset didnt seem to spool faster on higher gears when compared to the garrett. Whether this is because of housings or bearings, i dont know.

        Yes and different wheel size.

Yes,I read that too.As it says, from the onset of useful boost to the red line, the difference between a BB turbo and a Journel bearing turbo is purely accademic. Its below the onset of boost that a BB turbo has an advantage. For a racing engine, this is not so important. For a daily driver, much more important. The engine I want to build is not for daily use!
Billman, what is the spec of you current Holset. The compressor wheel trim you quoted (60/84) looks very similar to the GS-Racing HX-40 at 58.92/83.2. (50-51 trim).I dont have any A/R info so I cant say how the GS-Racing HX-40 compares A80Avant's GT.

The wheels GS racing specifiy don't exist. Those are messed up translated dimensions in inches. I'm interested to see which hotsides they fit these days. I asked for pictures because the didn't knew if it was a #14 or ...

I had some 'genuine' Chinese holset clones in my hands build together from different parts salvageable from ebay, showing some weird combinations. Still i'd give them a try after rebalancing and replacing the standard plain cupper like bearings.

As for turbine housings, Bullseye is currently doing some Tial style housings fitting the BorgWarner CHRA, Holset CHRA coming in the near future.
Still, a divided housing doesn't make the difference A80 is describing. Without descent measurements it's nearly impossible to make any statements about it.

Be sure to feed them with a plenty supply of oil and i'll bet it'll last.
I'd give it a shot. I don't know what they ask these days but i had them on my doorstep for under 300 bucks. They'll eventually learn how to make an entire budget turbo in stead of producing single parts for our big OEM's...
