    MTM Chips

So I have finally got round to sorting out all the tiny niggles out with the s2 and can spend some of my hard earned cash on some new goodies for her.

When she was exchanged over to my hands i got some MTM chips and was told they gave about 50hp extra on top of stock power.

What kind of torque improvement do you gain on top of stock, as far as im aware you just need to solder it into the stock ECU however despite being pretty wizzy with electronics i dont have a diagram so could someone point me in the correct direction.

Also is a remap after the install required? I would assume you do require a remap so can anyone recommend a good place in the south or London area.

    Thanks

    Chris

Have a 94 ABY, complete standard apart from a full scorpion exhaust.

The fact that you were told, that they were MTM chips does not mean they actually are.
I can write super mario into the chip, then take a marker and write MTM on it, does it mean MTM created super mario?
MTM Stage 1 has 264 PS, ~1.35 bar peak boost and very soft/smooth boost delivery, especially with RS2 EM. That means +34hp.

Anyway, you seem to be very confused. The chips ARE the remap. A generic one, but that is the entire point of them.
If you open the ECU, you can see whether the two memory chips are soldered to the board or if they are socketed. If they are socketed it is likely the ECU has already received some sort of upgaded chips.
If they are not socketed, you need to carefully unsolder the chips and solder in sockets. Then insert the tuned chips in the sockets (and make sure to insert them the right way around).

All that said, I'd be really careful about inserting random chips into the ECU.

I can confirm that. My old Avant setup came with original MTM stage 1 chips and original MTM ECU mod sticker. I was not impressed with the 260HP on the rolling road and on a normal road.

Well, it's possible to take the MTM chips, add a bit fuel on top and run more boost, so you will get 280hp, but you will have to use richer mixture, so fuel economy will suffer.

The MTM chipset is remarkable because it reduces urban fuel consumption by as much as 1.5-2L per 100km, due to the mixture being a lot leaner than stock in the entire range.

Note that *real* MTM chips, e.g. Stage 1 (260 hp, 2.5 Bar (stock) MAP sensor) or Stage 1+ (280 hp, 3.0 Bar MAP required), have one of the chips on a "daughter" (encryption) board (as shown on the left hand side of the photo below). If you don't have the encryption board, then you either don't have real MTM chips OR you have real MTM chips but they will never work.

Note the hand labling. This is typical of real MTM chips IME.

In the USA this is correct, but it is not correct for europe.
I have seen an euro MTM ECU being disassembled, and there were no encryption boards. It also had modified software for the automatic transmission, and there was no encryption board inside the AT ECM either. Both ECU's had MTM seals on them.

Also, all those fancy encryption boards are utterly useless. Why? Because the ECU does not know anything about an encryption board and just reads the chip as normal. If you simulate that behavior, you can read the entire chip through the encryption board and after that copy it normally all you want.

My EU car MTM chips/ECU and MTM seals had no encryption board.

But copying would be against all moral and legal standards. Who would do that?

                      Everyone.
At least that is how it looks in most of europe right now... especially for 3B/AAN, because tuning companies want in excess of 400 euros for a copypaste tune...
Don't misunderstand me, I don't say it is right. My point was that the encryption boards don't stop someone who wants to copy and are a waste of space.

But let's not discuss copyright issues here. The thread will go offtopic very, very fast.

I am somewhat sceptical about the chips now, they dont have any handwritten labels, and if they did they have been covered up with yellow labels from a label maker, one says motor and the other says boost.

Think i shall just bin them, unless anyone has any other ideas that could help me ID them as Gen componants.

                        thanks

I have a set identical to those, LD2 S2 260ps written on them, same label and pen. ECU came out of an English S2 Avant being parted out.

Do yours have the daughter/encryption board?
