Depending on what car you are talking about, look on the crank pulley. Its got a notch in it. That should line up with a mark on the block. There is also a hole in the trans housing where you can line up a zero mark. If its a car with distributor like the 3b, you can also use a mark on the dizzy. rotor should point towards the front of the car.

To make absolutely sure its TDC, you can stick a piece of welding wire or something down in there and see when it gets to its highest point.

That not quite right, your tdc will be in the middle of the point where the piston comes to the top and it goes down. Your best bet is to use a dail gauge Your see this with the gauge

thats what I meant. I kinda just meant to make sure its at the "correct" TDC if you are going to rely on the dizzy mark. Not meant to be an exact point of TDC

I've used a 3/8 extension bar through the spark plug hole and a bit of "feel" and got it spot on. This was was on a 1982 golf 1.3 engine worth more in scrap though !

terry is correct the real way is using a lift gauge.

wioth vag cars ive found that they are not exact pieces of engineering. punched dots for timing etc.

use a smooth ended implement down the spark hole try to go half way between the point whr it stops rising and starts falling. there is a small time elapse at tdc.

then line it up and turn it over by hand.

Aye this was done on mine, AndyP has a special tool that screws into the sparkplug for the dial gauge.

              Trick bit of kit

Exactly I made one using a weld rod and a old spark plug and a dail gauge from eBay
