    Low oil warning indication

After chasing a ferrari into work this morning, I noticed my engine was a bit noisier than usual, so once it cooled down a bit I checked the oil.. it's only just registering on the tip of the dipstick.

When is the low oil warning supposed to appear?

I checked all round the car and it doesn't seem to be dropping oil, so it must have just consumed it, which is a bit of a worry..

Maybe I have a faulty oil waring sensor..

    HI Jason,

I don't think there is a low oil warning on the S6, low pressure yes, level no. The only warnings you'll get are low pressure and high pressure. I've never seen a sump oil level sensor on any 5 cyl, don't think we have one...

aha, I had better check it more often then and monitor consumption more closely

Doesn't the autocheck have a low oil level warning light? MIne came on once independently of the dashboard oil pressure warning light...

There isn't a level sensor. The autocheck only comes on when the pressure is low. IIRC the autocheck is activated by the lower pressure switch (built into the pressure gauge sender) and the light is activated by the higher pressure switch.

Just dragging up an old thread, was wondering why I was having the same kind of issues...
The red oil warning comes on whe the ignition key is turned to on, but no cranked, and disappears immediately after starting the engine. It then reappears immediately after shutting off the engine and turning the ignition back on again.
I have replaced the smaller of the 2 oil sender things near the bottom of the block, would I be well placed to change the larger can type one too? Or is it likely to be something else?
What is it? Oil level is perfect, oil pressure is good, no leaks......
            thanksfor any thoughts...

I had this when i changed my water hoses i **** my self.
Check both the sensors and connections, it turned out my 1pin connection was a little wiggly

I have already changed the smaller of the 2 sensors (high pressure I think) and I know that the connection is good.... I cleaned the plug and made sure it was a snug fit...
I didnt change the can type sensor, (which is the low pressure and guage sender?)
Would changing this sensor also have a bearing on it?
I am sure the wires themselves are ok, as they are not at all brittle, or frayed...
                The guage works fine also...

I have a sim'ilar problem, oil warning light come's on when ignition is turned on and engine not started, but not with engine running, good oil preasure,I just think its something to do with the wireing, haveing just had the engine rebuilt.
However if you are running low on oil the tappets let you know real quick first sign on my s6,so check again for leaks, oilcooler for a start,or oil futher back that may appear to come from gearboxs ect,oil has a habit of traveling a long way back before it shows up sometimes.

                    Am I missing something here?
The light should be on if the chuffin engine isn't running. How can it have pressure without been run?
As long as it goes out after start up and dosent come back on until switch off then its fine!

I think you are missing somethingnot too sure....
We are talking the autocheck red flashing dripping oil can, with accompanying beeping... this should not come on under any circumstances surely, unless there is a fault or a problem?
I am sure its nothing to worry about, but I wouold sure like to stop it, especially if it is only by changing a sender...
BTW, it never used to do this, only started a little while ago......

That should only acctivate after or above 2500 rpm with low oil pressure.
It should not come on when engine not running. I bet its your autocheck thats sh@gged! I have had a customers car with a similar fault, twas the autocheck playing silly ******s.

Could be the sensor, i have seen those pressure sensors (small one of the two) crack and start leaking oil, possible you might just have a dodgy one or a bad connection to it.

I think they are only rated to .3bar, so any pressure lower they turn on the warning light and buzzer.
