    new to the forum

Hi guys, iv just joined the forum as iv bought a 80 coupe quattro, not quite a s2 i know but looking to make it a bit special. Iv got a bit of a history with engine modification and tuning but nothing on the audi side. was wondering whats the best ways to get high power, reliable everyday driver?

The coupe i have is a 2.2 and i undertand a s2 lump will go on the mounts using my 5 speed but that if i wanted 6 speed its quite a bit of modification such as the tunnel and strut tops etc?

What sort of power figures are people running, what sort of funds are required to get there?

what differences are there between the block i will have in my coupe and the s2 block?

Any help is appreciated, thanks mike

You cant use the block mate. Use the full S2 engine.
6 speed box will go straight in, you'll just need the front half of the prob from an ABY 6 speed and the front ABY driveshafts and S2 front subframe. It all bolts up, no mods required.

Ive done the s2 conversion myself in my 2.3 Coupe Quattro, do a search i did a write up on my project a while back.

I was lucky and bought a crash damaged s2 ABY avant for £1000 the majority of the parts were there for the conversion. Including the loom ecu transmission etc.

The only body modification i made to my coupe was welding on a front s2 strutbrace. but that is optional.

Im running just over 300bhp in my s2, and it has been used as a reliable every day driver. Never let me down. Its off the road again now for more handling + overhaul mods, so keep your eyes peeled for an update next year.

With the prices of perfectly good S2s as low as they are, you're better off getting one rather than converting. Should be lower insurance too as cars with engine conversions aren't the easiest to insure nowadays. That said, the CQ shell is lighter and it's a bit different having a B3 shape coupe rather than the facelifted to B4 S2 coupe.

Other than James above, Azman has also converted a couple of cqs and error404 is currently doing his.

The s2 convertion is pretty straight forward, but quite a bit of work & expense. James did his the smart way and bought a stacked S2 donor car. Mine is more of a parts jigsaw I agree with Rusty, unless you are really attached to the coupe just sell it and buy an S2.

The only reason I'm converting mine is that I never planned to change the engine but having spent 3 years refurbishing the whole car including some pretty substantial work to the chassis, I'm in this for the long haul. Power greed has consumed me

ah right thanks for the info. if its going in that direction do you guys know what mods i could do to get a bit more poke out of the coupe as it is then? any special tips, or swaps such as inlets, throttle boddies etc? I do have a need for speed but also know its too easy to get carried away with a project. might just leave standard and tidy it up....

On a bit of a hiding to nothing with the 2.2 10v. IMO. YOu could do the usual cam, flowed head, exhaust manifold etc. NA tuning and aim for 160bhp. A stroker conversion to 2.6 will see a bit more but by the time you've done all of that you could just buy an S2... Different idea but ultimately faster. Depends if you want to be different and have 160-180bhpthe crowd and get 280bhp for the sameish money... respec due if you go the different route, a fire breathing NA 10V would be something special to hear for sure!

The guys on motorgeek.com tend to have good info on modding this engine type.

Modding an NA engine for me you on a hiding to nothing, you'll won't get the gains of that you would with forced induction either turbo or supercharging.

I'm getting Deja Vu. Read my project tread thats how I got started - its a slippery slope!

IME the best mods you can do to the coupe is upgrade to poly bushes, renew / uprate dampers and brakes as well as add some chassis bracing to make it handle and stop better. You don't need more power to go a LOT faster cross country
But if you want more under your right foot get an S2

                    My tuppence

Tidy it only and drive it, look for a good S2 that suits you, sell the Coupe if you don't need a spare car and homefry the S2 and read this forum all the time.

Tuning a n/a is a waste of money when compared to chipping a turbo, imho.
