yes i did. Thought that it would have spooled faster though and couldnt be bothered to go on a custom turbine housing to make it work.

Thats when Holsets were the best?

some people just need to be reminded of the same all over again....

with the info and logs we had at the time, the holset was the best choice. Possibly with a K26hotside it would have done the job. I was already on a K27 Em and sourcing a new K26 and making a flange and then another new downpipe for the whole thing, didnt seem like the answer. The bullseye hotside was way too big for the engine.

But yes, holsets are efficient whether you like it or not. You dont have to believe me.

Remember Aron going for a smaller hotside on his GT30R once upon a time? Does that count?
That pretty much finalised my turbo choice. But I still wonder whether I did the right thing by selling my brand new shiny RS2 turbo.

Jim Green stateside went from a 35r to a PTE5857, but his is making 500whp on 91oct pump at the moment... He wanted a lower powerband, and has one.

It's interesting but a lot of people I've seen have gone down from a GT35r seems for the common man it's just one step too far

                  i wouldn't go smaller.

as soon as that happens its over before it began. who needs low end anyway. when your on it you get smoked by a big turbo with a little fella.

mines about 35r size. id be picking carefully and going vband, billet and bb. id go similar size and use moder efficiency to give me slightly higher peak and better spool. more efficient throughout.

ive looked at holsets myself. im more a precision man but a mate use to make them for holset. they are efficient but fitting a kxx hotaside would be a backward move to old tech/poor flow. holset is bang for buck but would suit my 530d better than my s2 i feel.

The 35r is a big turbo. It is probably the biggest you can "get away" with on the street, and that is only if you are willing to rev to 8500. That said, the billet 35r displays 30r type spool and outflows regular 35r by nearly 7lbs/min. It is true that I gave it the best chance of quikc spool with a free flowing intake, an equal length header with tial vbands in and out, exc... It would be intersting to see what a billet hta35r would spool like on a cast manifold and stock intakes manifolds..

                        35 r graph on a 2l 4 pot

                        FWD as well

As for being downgrading I know of quite a few people who have swapped from the 35r to a 30 for track use, the 35r only seems to work nicely on a stroked engine so I'd imagine its quite well suited to a Audi 5 pot motor.

that graph looks like mine would spool tbh.

i dont think its the displacement thats key its flow. for instance honda 1.6 will handle 35r or sc61 as i have and do 10 second 1/4 the rev high though. flow

I was going to put gt35 with Repo's manifold on my ur but after reading about the turbo I have gone for wagners rs2 mani and rs2 turbo.

One day I will use it, in the mean time the set up is going back under the stairs.
