    possible alternator problem

I think I have a problem with my alternator, I fitted all the new parts including the battery. Yesterday I did a test drive everything seemed fine. This morning I took the car to drive to my work, when I was out for 10km two small indicator light came up, one of the abs (?) the second for the battery. I looked on my voltage gauge and it said around 11,5v during the ride.

Could it be that the alternator is broken?, the battery is new, 63ah.

    Thanks,

    Erik

You could have the same problem i had, in that the alternator belt is not tight enough and slipping.

Martyn at V.A.G parts came up with a great tip, in that pinch the mid way point of the belt and try and twist it. If it twists to 90% or more then the belt is too loose.

But when I start the engine and open the hood, then I can see if the belt is turning. If not I have to tighten it. What is the normal voltage which you see on the gauge for the battery.

          Thanks,

            Hi Erik

I think you've misunderstood the point i was trying to make, your checking the belt tension to see if it's slipping.
The belt will turn with the engine running if it's slipping but the alternator wont be spinning at the correct revolutions to generate sufficient charge.

The voltage will be about 13.0 -14 volts the manual say 12 -15 but thats so abstract.

So it could be that the wheel of the alternator is running, but it isnt charging the battery. I have all belts replaced so it good be the reason.

Aye mate, worth a check especially after you've just changed your belts and the voltage was normal before.

Dont know on the battery front if thats the correct ampage, sure the techheads like Audiman and S2Central can advise.
