    Noisey Distributor

I have a noisey distributor and was wondering if these are still available on an exchange bais? Or alternatively, can you just change the gear?

You can buy the gear on it's own, there's usually one on Ebay for £25 but typically, not now. It's worth while checking that the one you have has been shimmed correctly, from memory they need 5 thou of end float. If its much bigger than this it can make them noisey.

'5 thou of end float' - what does that mean Andy?

End float is the amount the shaft can move, when you get the new metal gear you have to fit shims on top of it to get the gap right. When I got mine it didn't come with shims or a roll pin to fit it. I couldn't find any shims to buy so I used stainless washers and put them on a belt sander to get the thickness right.

Impressive Andy and thanks for the 3B manual - very useful for my RR as well.

Do you have section 28 for the dizzy as the one I've got only goes up to section 26.

Just need a gear now, although as usual when you want one there aren't any for sale.

Anyone got a drive gear to sell me as I don't fancy the £400 for a replacement dizzy?

have problem with distributor noise I think. It get noise when I get rpm down. Is it possible it come from gear? where isn't noise in idle or get rpm up... Used with metal and plastic gear but it is the same.

Check/Adjust the end float as Andy shows above, if its too loose it will resonate below 2000rpms and rattle. Also if your camshaft chain is badly worn it will contribute to the problem.

also I have three distributors https://www.dropbox.com/sc/ogsri3p2x...YPzvxhgPuUvEsa

In the left from 3b with plastic gear. In center is with metal gear from 7a. I used both and the same noise. They are about 30.3mm diameter. In the right is brass gear from 7a which is 30.8mm diameter, which I haven't used. I used 7a head and cams. So are the gears diferent types from factory? I am sure it have influence for a noise also
