    Squeling Fuel Pump

Sods law, you fix one problem and another rears its ugly head.

I've now noticed that the fuel pump is making a right racket when I slow down. It's always made gurgling noises when you first fire it up but now when decelarating there is a definite squeal coming from the pump.

I did think it was the rear brakes but the noise continues for a few seconds after I'm completely stationary. It also occurs when driving slowly. It sounds like the pump is running dry.

Is it a sign that fuel pump is on it's way out? After fixing the air leak problem I still get what feels like a very slight misfire when at high speeds (80mph and above) while it has no problems at all through the gears. Could it be the fuel pump? Either that or another little air leak I have to track down.

    Ben,

If it is your fuel pump and knowing your plans for more power, it would be a perfect excuse for fitting one of these:

    Bosch Motorsport fuel pump 0580 254 044 200l/h @ 5bar fuel pressure

    I got mine from here:

    Cheers,

      Ben,

I hate to say I told you so, fix one and another... ;-)

You know the score with the fuel pump, think 5 pot early 100's and Mk2 Gti's, what was the first sign of the pump on its way out....??

You could change the fuel filter in the hope its semi blocked and restricting flow... wouldn't hold your breath on that though! Also, how you described the 'misfire ay 80', I had that recently also, seems to of been cured..... by changing just one vacuum hose! well I say seems... becuase I changed the hose Sunday afternoon and a VERY fast run in the evening, won't say how fast :eek2: seems to of proved that fault has gone. It was wet and coldish which of course are the best conditions for turbo cars, so maybe the problem will come back??

But anyhow, the N020 3535 hose that goes to the ECU, it goes through a 180 degree bend just before fitting onto the ECU, the bend was quite acute on my car and the hose being 10 years old nearly, felt a bit too soft for my liking, like it may be folding in on itself and restricting. I fitted a new piece of vacuum hose about 3 inches longer so the 180 degree bend is now more rounded. That seems.... to of cured the problem on mine, time will tell, but gotta be worth replacing it for the cost invloved. All things being equal too... I'll need that fuel pump Mark has above very soon myself I'm not talking 2.5 either.... speaking of which, has anyone ever used the offical Audi 'Hot bolt paste' when re-fitting turbos....!!

I asked a few people about the hot bolt paste and no one could come up with an explanation for it. Anti seize I guess but I didn't use any, hopefully that is not a problem and if it is I don't think I want to be told

Anti seize is all I can think its purpose is, no problem Leigh! although... lack of its use could be the cause of your noise!

Holt bolt paste? I just used copper grease on all the bolts and sure enough they all came undone with ease when the head job was done. Damn good stuff, well worth using, makes a bit of a smoke when the manifold etc get hot for the first time.
