The other day I was driving along and when i put my foot down, my car just wasnt responding smoothly. It sort of feels like its missing a bit, sort of coughing and spluttering. Any ideas? Its pretty cold here and I'm wondering if it is a dampness problem? Just recently had the car serviced also, wrong spark plugs? Dodgy leads? Would welcome any advice. Have posted another thread on here today re. diff leaking oil; could this be related to the engine spluttering?

cheers
did they changed spark plugs?what engine code do you have?is your car cipped somehow?or do you use some kind of manual boost controller?Missfire usualy doesn't caugh, you only feel it running 4 or 3 cylinders. It may be related to maf somehow. What exactly the car was serviced for?only diff or something else?

Yes, whats your engine code? 3B or ABY (5 gears or 6).
You could check the plug type and their tightness, the N75 boost control valve down in front of the airfilter box could be at fault as well.
3B engine, completely standard, no mods. It was at the garage for its yearly major service last week; they changed plus, oil, filters etc. Just went out in the car again, very strange. It just seems to splutter, if you know what I mean? I used to have an audi 80 years ago and remember a similar issue; garage change the leads and it was fine.

what was it running like before the service? has it just had the problem since then?
forgot to say earlier clean your maf with some carb cleaner.
if it is the leads that need changing then my mate did this to his 3B and they were very expensive, about £150 .
it was running spot on before the service. this problem occurred a about a week after the service, so not sure i cant totally point to the service as being the problem. being a bit stupid; whats the maf?

the MAF is the sensor that measures the mass air flow. its on the air box. easy to remove. can send some photos tomorrow.
also if they changed the leads see if you can find out what for as they might have used cheap one's. My 3b got the lead to the coil caught between the strut brace and one of the fuel lines resulting in fine driving on part throttle but on boost massive misfires and some flames out the exhaust, all I had to do was move it out the way and fine again.
you should ceck your conections under the bonet. If they changed filters and more maybe they needed to disconect harneses to get acces.Ex:aan urs4 you need to remove maf conector to gain acces to airfilter..
And ofcourse get some code readings and paste them on here.
I don't mean to offend you in any way - but if you don't know how a MAF looks, maybe it would be smart to let someone diagnose the problem?
In either way, before you start pulling random things apart in your car and possibly mess something up in the process - read the codes. It might be something really simple and the ECU will tell you what it is.
Only if you can not find it that way (and you often can't) should you start messing around with various parts on your car.
I had a similar problem a few weeks back, sometimes my S2 aby would fly, then the next minute it had just half power and sometimes it would be powering along and it would cut in and out of power. It was the MAF as mentioned above, it had a tiny crack in one of the two small wire mounts that holds the delicate wires that measures the mass air flow (MAF) for the ECU just before the air filter box. Remove it and have a look inside. Although you may not see if its faulty by eye, although i did. They cost £88 +vat from euro car parts. Goodluck sorting it.
I'm not very experienced with the innards of cars etc., so i take the point that my lack of knowledge should preclude me from attempting any fix myself, but I always find its a bit cheaper at the garage if you can point them in the right direction. although, having said that, I'm keen to learn more and i have to start somewhere.
I'll get the codes read first; hopefully its something simple.
