    Ken,
    determination of counterweight and overall crankshaft mass is a matter of many aspects most important ones concerned with loads imposed on the assembly by the alternating masses.
    Apart from other considerations such as idle stability, softer and more regular engine behaviour (which might not be of interest), depending on layout of engine (IL4, IL5, V6, V8 or whatever) quantity of needed masses (counterweights and flywheel) vary quite significantly. So it is not true the least the better, also taking in mind any balancing on each throw not taken care directly by the corrispnding counterweight will be transferred to the main journals, those being much more stressed together with main bearings. Lightening must be done with the right knowhow.
    One of the worst layouts as mass needs is the IL4 180° throws. One tuner I know, some years ago tuned a IL4 engine for a local racing championship. After all the blueprinting he lightened all the cranckshaft and flywheel masses as much as he could. The result was on the main track's straight the car was 20 Km/h slower than with the stock crank and flywheel assembly (only balanced). Then someone ( ) suggested he had gone too far with the lightening and after having done the job correctly not only the missing 20 Km/h came back, but he gained another approx 10Km/h top speed in the same place.

    The IL5 with 72° throws is much better than the IL4 180°, but still not good enaugh not needing flywheel masses at all.

    The Ø20mm OEM pin should be good enaugh for most of the application, while if going much over the 700 Nm and 600 Hp a Ø22-24mm pin might be safer.
    Of course the bigger pin will increase overall alternating mass therefore its dimensions must be chosen accordingly with the real load they will be asked to withstand.

The rods look the same length, so maybe they raised the pin height to use the stock block with the stroker crank.

    Does anyone know what happened to that motor once it got into the car? The article only discussed it on the engine dyno, it wasn't in a car at that point.

      Lets start saying that, as I have had the possibility to check from different trustable sources, as long as LENGHT TO STROKE ratios don't go as low as 1.5, in a forced induction engine longer conrods don't give performance improvements, while keeping conrod short enaugh will help on having lighter conrods (at same max resistance) therefore rising accordingly acceptable peak rpm.

      Just an example to show differences in load (therefore in max rpm) and possible output for different conrod lenghts and weights (wich cause different inertial loads both beacause of a different kinematics and different weight) using the same system and hypotesis than before:

      Let's analyze the 92.8mm stroke (I choose this one because I was asked for, but results can be applyed with the right proportion to all other examples):

      1) 152 mm conrod lenght = 1.64 ratio, 184 gr reciprocating mass, 537 Nm@ 6910 rpm -> ~541 Hp;
      2) 144 mm conrod lenght = 1.55 ratio, 160 gr reciprocationg mass, 537 Nm@ 6985 rpm -> ~547 Hp;
      3) 160 mm conrod lenght = 1.72 ratio, 205 gr reciprocation mass, 537 Nm@ 6840 rpm -> ~536 Hp;
      4) 160 mm conrod lenght = 1.72 ratio, 160 gr reciprocating mass, 537 Nm@ 7070 rpm -> ~554 Hp;

      Last example above, to show how things change if everything but reciprocating mass is kept the same:
      at 160 mm lenght, going from 205 to 160 gr reciprocating weight will allow rising revs of 230 rpm therefore increasing power 3.35% (in this example = 18 Hp).

      Of course conrods of different makes and/or better or higher quality materials, might have different or smaller reciprocating mass variations, but, as I told before, global proportions should stay more or loess the same.

      Any comment or add-on welcome.

        So...

        Which engine block and crank is the way to go then? A gas 2.5l or the diesel version? I'd say 2.5l gas - saw too mentioned, AAT and AEL. Anyone know which is the preferred one?

          A diesel is easier because it already have the oil-jets to spray the underside of the pistons. In gas versions the block has to be machined to fit these jets.

            So the ABY/AAN head will fit the diesel block?

            And the 16mm extra deckheight means looong conrods... ok, cool.

              The head fits with some modifications. Have you read this thread: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...hlight=stroker

                Re-birthing this thread partially, Question I have is should I Lighten my Crank or just balance it? The guy who will be doing it is very good so quality of work isnt a problem. I assume its best to get it neutrally balanced? I will be running with and aluminium flywheel either way but figured it would be best to lighten the crank as well for a "free-er" revving engine. The turbo fitted is a GT3071. Other than reliability what performance trade offs will this give me?

                  Going back to this one, I never had my crank lightened on the advice of Marco from this thread.

                  The folks who have lightened their cranks how have you found it?

                    I have balanced and lighten crank form pk-motorsport V2 for my 2.2 engine. The crank is lighter.

                    I found the engine to rev more happily and react on the gas pedal quicker.

                      I see your now removing the PKM crank is it related to any of the reasons in this thread?

                          Best choise 95.5 crank 159mm rods 236mm diesel block and short pistons. I have Audi S4 AAN 2.6 stroked,220mm block with diesel crank 144mm rods and special 82.5mm pistons.
                          As it has diesel crank and it works like diesel All power on low RPM. Good for town daily driving.
