"To Improve" is way too vague.
You can make the higher end more responsive at the cost of the lower end and vice versa.
Such is the fate of engines without variable valve timing.
In either case, you will need a remap to take advantage of it.
On an otherwise stock engine, it is not worth it at all.
I would not touch cams until about 350hp.Comment

You'd need to fit an adjustable sprocket to the intake cam too for any really worthwhile tweaking, cam clocking is a dark art unless you or your tuner know exactly what you're doing I'd leave it bePanthero Coupé quattro 20vt

I disagree. Standard cams and their timing are not a good compromise. They are timed to meet the emissions and desired fuel mileage, not performance on neither low nor the high revs. You can make the higher end more responsive at the cost of the lower end and vice versa.

So by reclocking You can gain performance on all ranges (up to a point of course), with cost of emissions and fuel economy.
To answer original question, yes, they are deffo worth buying, but You need to know what You're doing with them. Otherwise it may end up in poor power, ultimately a disaster when pistons hit the intake valves.Everything less than 2 bar is considered to be naturally aspiratedComment

Very well, but someone with an otherwise stock engine would not need to do this...I disagree. Standard cams and their timing are not a good compromise. They are timed to meet the emissions and desired fuel mileage, not performance on neither low nor the high revs.

On a slight tangent, has anyone run cams other than S2, RS2 or 7A? Are there any aftermarket cams that are meant to be a better comprimise (either for road or track driving)?1993 ABY Coupe | BMW R1200 GS

Hey Dan
I run custom cams specced for my stroker motor. I also run variable timing and solid lifters on both my cams and the results from tweaking the timing were negligible because of the rather severe nature of the lift and duration of the cams. As far as driving feel, the car has a ragged idle at about 1200 rpm and feels similar to my old Big Block Corvette that I used to run back in the day. Very nice to feel the loping of the motor and then the ultra quick revs as you hit the gas. Unfortunateley we're visiting family for Christmas in SoCal and I can't go out and fire up the urS4 right now ;>(
For anything a little lower on the building level than mine, my guy Dave Jones, uses both 7a cams and has found more benefit from them than the single RS2 exhaust cam.
