    flywheel woes

The WR engine rebuild has been challenging (to say the least)... And the prep work for CO setting and MOT saw the worst nightmare come true... It's dropped its recently fitted flywheel timing pin.

So, the question is one of balance really... The engine and flywheel were calibrated together, clearly removing the flywheel, drilling it, and refitting a new pin will, by default, upset the balance. (Thus negating the benefits/costs of all the balancing work, I assume)...

Just how critical is the flywheel balance?, we've got two options now, refit a pin to the broken 'balanced' flywheel and hope it holds or fit a spare WR flywheel?

    Thoughts please?

    Kind regards

Or have a pin made up that's a few tho larger and perhaps tapped and force it in then your not drop it again

We're looking at maybe doing the old 'freeze the pin, warm the flywheel' to give the thermal clamping... This may be achievable by dropping the yoke off the bottom of the 'box and pulling the flywheel around to it's lowest point... The alternative is the engine and gearbox onto the workshop floor for the third time in three months...

Its just a pin. part no N 013 210 2. Its 6x16 so it says..

Drill out the old and knock a new one in. Be as it was balance wise.

It's not 6mm diameter , that sounds like one of the 3 clutch location pins, the timing pin is 4mm diameter if I remember correctly .

You should be able to get at the pin location by taking the starter motor off.

If it's fallen out and not snapped off, you will as Driftin jo say's, be able to get at the pin location by removing the starter motor. Tap the replacement in with a bit of loctite stud fastener or something similar, that might hold it in place. If not, you're into removing the flywheel to sort it. Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies folk... Hopefully we'll be able to use this technique to redrill it and replace...

                    Fingers crossed....

Well, that was another interesting, if potentially expensive day.

On the endoscope we'd assumed the pin had snapped off in the flywheel as it looked like this on the screen.

                      But

When we took the subframe off and exposed the flywheel through the bottom plate, we found this...

The hole completely empty and the pin laying at the bottom. The pin is 3.95mm in a 4mm hole. Glued. This, in some respects was a relief as it made fitting a new one a lot easier.

Anyway, the expensive bit. The Crank Sensor's taken the hit as the pin slipped out, ETKA shows £156+VAT. Nice.
