  • Cam Belt

    11th hour post, as usual,

Cam belt service being done tomorrow, as well as a few other bits and pieces (water leak, cam cover gasket, v-belts...)

I have already asked them to change the water pump and make sure they use a new tensioner....

...are there any other BTDT items that should be replaced during the cam belt change?

    Cheers
    Jim

    Jim,

If they find the front crank seal is leaking get them to change it.

It's a pain of a job to get it out, but, it's worth doing while the crank pulley is off.

    HTH,

    Steve.

Check and possibly replace crank and cam end seals.

I'd also use a new bolt in the vibration damper to crank mount.

I'd say all the usual things... tensioner, water pump because its easy to do at the same time, crankshaft bolt is a must IMHO. Those two nasty water hoses are also easy to do at the same time whilst she's stripped down.

            thanks all,

the two water pipes are being done, at least one of them has a very small leak.

I'll prompt them on the crankshaft bolt and seals.

Gatwick Audi are doing the work.

Is the crank seal a common thing to go?

I'm getting a bit of oil from somewhere at the fornt of the engine underneath and just can't find the source of it.

Out of interest how much do you think all this will cost from Audi? parts and Labour?

I'm thinking of doing the works but not sure I'm capable(don't hink I have the right tools - and never done this before) so will need to price all those parts and then see how much the local specialist is going to charge - need to speak to Martyn - yet more £££s

                Ker ching $$$$$$ <he rubs his hands>

On a serious note Doug, I couldn't change that seal, you'll have to have the cambelt off to do it surely and that means tools... :-(((, that seal is hiding in the alloy flange in this picture, behind the cambelt...

I had some oil in that 'area' but it wasn't from the cranshaft oil seal, more like the sump or maybe even from the RC gasket...

I noticed on some of your other pics that you had a bit of oil underneath Martyn - not as much as me - and that looks like the area it's coming from on mine - I'll add that to the never ending 'to do' list

Ha - you beet me to it - I'll need to look closer then - I got the sump gaskets from you because of this, so I might try this first.

Doug, I'm relly not too bothered on mine, I only say this because the engine oil level doesn't drop, period! and neither does any other fluid level, ps etc... so I reckon its an old leak never cleared up.

Do you loose oil? if so then maybe yes you should look further.

Front crank seal with the cambelt yes, I rememeber reading a US AAN post about changing the seal, his parting thoughts on it was, don't bother! the rear one.. my lord yes... a nightmare! do it at the same time the clutch gets done! they hardly ever give trouble though, any of the crank ones!

I reckon clean up up oil off the block Doug, then run it for a while to see where the oil is still coming from??

The alloy flange is the oil pump

Audi special tools required to remove the vibration damper (aux belt wheel). It can be removed without the tool but hard to get it back to 450Nm (divide by 1,35 to get lbft).

We bought the tools with few pals. They cost nearly 400€ from the states (Blau) including shipping and customs (vat 22%).

One other location to check for a leak is the oil pressure sender on the side of the block, mine is seriously weeping now but will be changed next week along with belts, water pump, shocks, springs top mounts and a weeping rear diff seal too.

She's in for some major surgery but hopefully she'll feel virginal when she comes out again
