its hard to describe. you need to twist the basket, its held in by tabs turns about an inch IIRC. Its easier to get out than back in IME.
I made a u-shaped tool out of a piece of timber to help.

Yeah there is a nack to it but its not to hard.
You can take the cover of by chasing the looking plate round with a flat screwdriver, just needs a few knocks and it will pop open.

The basket then comes out, by rotating it slightly and the whole thing will then pull out.

      Good luck.

does the whole thing rotate? (the entire plastic looking jobie that surrounds the pump) there looks like a ring around the top with some arrows on anti clockwise, i tried rotation it, it didnt want to budge, should i rotate it clockwise or anti clockwise?

Anticlockwise, it will take a sudden jolt to snap it free, if you turn a pair or pliers upside down and wedge the rubber handle in each side you can twist them loose fairly easy.

But, if you are only changing the pump like for like then there is no need to remove the basket. Just grab the pump by the output hose and pull it up, there is a small plastic tab on top that you need to push aside with your finger and it will slide straight out.

Here is a labeled photo that might help releasing the pump from the basket (in this case a C4 UrS4 basket but the idea is the same):

Help wanted Audi RS2 fuel pump removal

Does any member have experience of removing the fuel pump from an Audi RS2. I have read on other forums to remove use a screw driver and hammer in the same way you do to remove the black tank cover turning the inner pump cage 10mm anti clockwise to free but they refer to S2 S4 and other Audi models so presume they all have a similar removal process.

I don’t want to over stress the plastic cage so can any body tell me which part of the cage you turn. The cage seems to be in two parts, one surrounding the pump which looks like it’s inside a larger cage with damping springs between the two.

The fuel pump outer cage is held in place by a third large orange bracket but I presume this is not disturbed.

I’ve attached a photos of my RS2 fuel pump if any one can help it would be greatly appreciated.

                            B3/B4 fuel pump removal procedure

This procedure is for a mid-90's Audi 90 and should work

Basically you want to rotate the basket "C" from "B" to "A" to remove the basket and "A" to "B" to re-stall it.

It is the outer cage in the pic you´ll want to turn anticlockwise för about 10 mm. Can be VERY hard if it has been there since new. I had no chance whatsoever to get mine loose without engaging all four grooves to even the turningforce. i used a homemade tool with a 4" (i think) plumbingpipe and four m8 screws like the picture shows. You need to grind the heads down if you get them somewhat offcenter.
