I thought my RS2 was running properly..

    Hello all.

I have an RS2-96 model witch I though was in good running condition. Acceleration is good and engine runs steady. I have recently acquired the car and am working towards getting everything 100% before I add a Chip to get the little extra out of the car, probably Paul’s home fries. The engine is 100% original except for a Dahlbeck Cone kit (K&N).

So in my quest to checkout the car I managed to borrow a VAG digital boost “tool”. This to check my boost levels. To my surprise the absolute maximum we managed to get is 1.8bar in the readout. Subtracting the 1 bar atmospheric pressure, leaves me with 0.8 bar boost pressure. And from what I have been reading I should be getting in the neighbourhood of 1.3 – 1.4 bar. A friend has a similar car with the MTM chip, a readout of his car (with the same boost diagnostic tool) shows readings at appx 2, 5 bar.

Okay, Houston we have a boost leak is what I think at first. We check all hoses and can find nothing (visually). We spray every hose with Start Gas (don’t know if that is the correct English word) to see if car sucks in false air (with the car running at idle). Engine runs steadily.

We change the diverter valve to an open forge type to see if that makes a difference, but the same results, no more boost than 0.8 bar. Sound is slightly more fun though..

My MAF seems fine (as opposed to my friends witch is quite dirty), but I will try the IPA trick that has been mentioned here on this forum. Don’t know if this should make a difference on boost levels? And the engine runs stable up to red-line, no “jerking”.

We changed the original wastegate spring for an upgraded version that we thighted to the max (using my friends wastegate “housing” ). Voila, boost pressure rose to stable 1 bar. The car felt more responsive, faster and my impression is that turbo spool up time is faster.

So, as far as I can tell, I’m left with a possible boost leak when the system is pressurised. In my humble recollection I think I have seen a posting explaining how to build a pressure testing utility, but I can’t find it now. Anybody have a tip for that posting or another web page explaining how to build it/use it?

AND, I more than welcome any tips as to regarding my problem. And please excuse my English grammar (if any problem?) as I am from Norway and English is not my primary language.

And I forgot to mention, no fault codes reading out the system.

another possibilty: Waste Gate Frequency Valve.
This controls the WG and is known to break often (Had mine changed and it literally fell apart when disasembling)

ok, as I`m not that skilled in the English technical terms : Do you mean the rubber "sheet" that sits inside the wastegate housing ? This is checked and in good condition..

            Arve,
The name for the rubber sheet in English is diaphragm, it is not easy for us to spell let alone a Norwegian to know it's name!.

I am always impressed by the ability of people to understand English when we are very poor at foreign languages ourselves.

              Nope.
The amount that the WG opens is controlled by a frequencyvalve that on it's turn is controlled by the ECU.
The valve is hard to see and replace but is in a hose that is coming out of the bottom of WG.

Tonight I'l try to find a diagram

Try to find any boost leak first, its the most common fault.
first try the hose at the throttle body, than goes to the ones near the intercooler, and the worst is if your intercooler has a small leak ....

I hope you can solve it soon.

                  Thanks !

I`ll try chasing after the boost-leak first, making a boost-utility.. Strange that this is not a standard tool at all VAG dealers ? Seems to be a frequent problem.

Then the frequency-valve that s2Carlo mentions. If it`s known to fail it`s worth checking out. I have also got another tip thats just the same. Nice if you have a diagram for that valve availible !

                    Problem Solved !!!

Took out the Waste Gate Frequency Valve and put in another WGFV and viola 1.4 bar pressure.. The difference is deffinatly to be felt !

Filled my defunct WGFV with WD-40. It came out black ! Repeated a few times, and now works flawlessly.

One less problem wih the car !

Thanks for all the input !
