Last Friday. On the M25 for 2 hours between M40 and M1 ! Head off to St Albans. At the bottom of the hill steam coming out of the grill. Manage to dive off left into a side street. Bonnet up, lots of coolant and that hot rubber smell - cannot see where the leak is. Start waggling some hoses and its the top hose to aux pump that looks loose. No tools in the car. Walk into St Albans. Halfords is a mile in the other direction! Tighten hoses. Drive through bad traffic to destination south of Stevenage all OK and the return journey to darkest Surrey two days later. Car going very well. Unpack car. Come back a bit later, coolant all over the driveway! More prodding shows the aux pump has split on the plastic cover over the pump impellor. £3 hose join bypassing the pump. Martyn at VAGPARTS cannot get one to me until next Saturday ( going on hols and want to use my car not hers ) - many thanks again for your help and advice Martyn. Local stealers do a good job allowing me to order by phone and pick up next day (£84.46 + VAT). All fitted. The old pump has a crack all around the plastic housing and with very little pressure breaks off in my hand. Lucky it didnt go half way to Cornwall... I cannot believe Audi rely on cheap plastic for such an important component...be warned ! James.
Another near miss......

That was a bit of luck James, I believe the pump is made by Bosch, My brother in law has one from a Mercedes ( IIRC with an alloy body) which was about £90. He has fitted it to his 1965 Alvis to aid the cooling of the rear cylinders. I will check and see what it is next time I see his car, it may be a suitable alternative to plastic.

The VAG TDi's have a similar pump on as ours, i found one on a Passat (K plate) and they are dead easy to remove (nick/borrow long term) from a scrappy as the pump is at the top of the engine at the front, stanley knife and unplug the wires and she is yours.
