    Oil/Water pump - Which one?...

I am currently at the beginning of my engine rebuild and have come across a conundrum. I have an ABY to come out and a 7A block and head to strip. I cannot find a diffinitive answer to which oil pump i can use. Can i use the ABY on the 7A block or do i need a 7A pump to maych the bolt patterns on the block.

The plan was to buy an ABY and see what happens as i can get the block re-machined.

Along with the oil pump, what water pump would i need. Once again i was thinking ABY as i plan on high-ish hp when i am done.

    Cheers for any help....

    Mike

AFAIK the oil pump bolt pattern is the same, the thing your going to have to be careful of is the cambelt tensioner. Does the 7A block have the drillings to mount the ABY tensioner? If not your going to have to get a 3B oilpump ( has an extra drilling for the relay roller ) and use the 3B water pump too.

looks like i can use ABY for both the oil and water pump...but will have a problem when it comes to cambelt tensioners....

has anyone had a similar experience with the tensioner issue?..

Carlos aka flat on your back has been around for a long while so wonder if anyone else has found a suitable alternative..

This is the reason I am using a 3B bottom end in my build, since the ABY / ADU / AAN oil and water pumps are so much more expensive. Plus side to ABY etc bottom end is being able to use the RS2 waterpump

The only issue is that the 7A block, like the 3B, doesn't have the extra meat cast inside the block for the ABY's 3 tensioner bolt holes.

You can either drill the block and seal the bolt threads to stop coolant loss. Or you can forget the ABY tensioner and use the 3B water and oil pump.
I'm using an ABY block, but decided to stick with the 3B water and oil pump. So I have 3 redundant holes in the block.

what about having the block drilled and using slightly shorter bolts to avoid breaking into the case....

That's maybe not the best idea you really don't want the tensioner dropping off or coming loose. Whats wrong with the 3B/7A set up?

nothing wrong with it at all... it's just my thinking was the ABY/ADU/AAN upgrades Audi designed must have been beneficial over these else why would they change these parts and incurr the costs associated with new designs/products.....

I was thinking of tapping the water pump slightly shallow and securing the bolts with a suitable loctite e.g. can be removed with a bit of force not crowbarring off!....

indeed the 7A/3B could be the route i go, i was just trying to keep things simple as i run an ABY and was transferring a few major components across from my current engine...

This has been a big learning curve for me and thanks to this forum i am learning so much.....

                    cheers

surely the easiest thing to do is just get an ABY block?

In which case then i'd go for the 3b setup personally.

Just go with the 3B setup, Mike. The only drawback I can think of is that you have to disturb the water pump each time you tension the cambelt. But that's probably better than the holes in the block for the ABY tensioner. The 3B water pump is a sturdier item anyway. The oil pump is also cheaper, if you want to renew it.

Don't forget these changes were only beneficial to Audi's bottom line at the end of the day, and not all of them were good for the likes of us.
