proven power?
Hibby's RE2400 measured about 190 on the rolling road, i dont think he has had it on the RR since thought to say where its at now. Thats got the GTI engineering conversion, i am not sure what else he is running though?
DangerousD's FWD 7A i went for a run in October and it felt very quick compared to my 90. He has a P&P job care of Tony 4v6, decat, i think bosch injectors, full stainless system.
Nogins as you know is a cheat but its bloody fast on NOS.
Mine, never been on a rolling road yet, but i would be happy with factory power and i am runnign bosch injectors, DTM back box, P&P'ed throttle body and now a decat. Plus a hill of time spent getting the rest of the engine running right. I cant see fold heavily modifying them now as an even older car as for the economic spend the gains are not massive. Power to weight, now thats an entirely different question. I am bound for knockhill again at the start of Febuary, yet my 170bhp 90 quattro was keeping a 200bhp integras and civic type R's.. Andys S2 was annoying the bigger boys! Basically i wouldnt geet too hung up on its only hal;f the battle.
200bhp PROVEN would be the benchmark for sure. There was a chap on club audi claiming 242bhp from a white FWD 90, which give his list of modificatinos seems very spurious.
It was more could a stock engine handle something like either a turbo bolted on the side same as a s2 etc. I've not heard of anyone getting major power out of a completely stock engine.
If the water rail mod was done would a 7a engine handle having s2 bits bolted on.
Mine made ~180whp at 034 with an early version of their kit (T3-60, Ic EMS, 034 stock size Bosch injectors, stock everything else). Another 034 customer is making ~225whp after some tuning with the current hardware (T3/T4, CDHG, chipped EMS). Both of these are without intercooling and mine has stock compression.
I believe the head water rail is unnecessary but you can certainly add one.
It is an accepted truth that the 7a uses the same strength crank and rods as a 3b, AAN, ABY, ADU. The 7a pistons are cast but with careful tuning and/or E85 I believe that they can outlast the stock rods.
obviously different for the US guys but surely you'd just stick a 3B in it Pete?
But I'm sure you could bolt all the bits on and get motronic mapped with boost to suit the compression levels?
3B & 7A head are the same except the water rail and some 7As have the sodium filled exhaust valves too, so compression and displacement & piston type are the only real differences AFAIK.
7a's cheaper engines and this one's not for madwolf's car, this is more for something I want to do at a later date. What I want to find out is if anyone's basically used 3b bits and turbo'd a 7a engine i.e. loom, ecu, turbo, inlet etc and if the engine would handle 300bhp fine, I won't need no more than that.
7a might be cheaper but once you add all the boltons and a chip it wont be cheaper then a 3b with a chipped ecu.
If you wait around you can pick up a compete 3b engine for ÂŁ300.
I think the only good thing about what your wanting to do is that its different from the norm and of course that is always appealing.
Also interesting to see that the 034 kit can make 225whp with out an IC.
I wonder how a stock 3b would run if the IC was removed. The intake track would then be shortened to about 30cm

I guess the question is how hight does IAT get pre IC? I am not sure that anyone is running a 7aT without IC and more than 10PSI. The 3b pistons can take more abuse than the 7as but you are not making power when preigniting.
225whp surprises me as that equates to about 300bhp at the fly factoring about 25% losses.
Seems a little ambitious without any type of charge cooling
I cannot speak for that car but mine has been boosted for ~4 years making ~240bhp with stock compression and no ill effects. The 225whp car is running a larger turbo than mine, for less heat, and lower compression.
put some pistons, rods, whater mani, in a 7A and limit will be a 800+ hp than it will need difrent cams. thats what i did to my 7A engine with grate sucksess
