What is it with this feckin' car?

I'm sort of in 2 moods at the moment, I'm just back from the MOT centre and the MOT now has a full years test. Thats the good bit! when I set off from the house the car seemed off a bit, about 1/2 a mile later there was some fairly thick white smoke out the exhaust and it seems like it's only running on 4 cyls. I sent it on in anyway and as it was a retest they didn't care about anything other than my fuel leak so passed it. On the way home the smoke went but rough running remained. At home, I pulled the injector leads off and no. 1 cyl is off. the oil is clean and the car didn't overheat at all, also there is no excess pressure in the water pipes.

I am hoping that with it sitting again one of the POS units has blown but I will look more tomorrow. God, I hope I dont have to lift the head off

So, after 5 months the car is MOT'd again but I cant drive it coz it's fecked! Great innit!

POS problems can be confirmed by swapping the POS connectors in *pairs* so the 1-2-3 POS becomes the 4-5 POS and vice versa. If you do this test and the miss moves to 4 (or 5?) then your problem is the POS. If it stays on cylinder 1, your problem is No. 1 coil, coil to plug boot or the plug. (Could even just be the plug).

Cheers, I'll be doing that tomorrow, one of them went just before the last mot expired (after a week of not being used) and I did this to diagnose. I think both my units now are from a V6, good news is I may have a spare one.

@gunman - think I have 2 x spare pos at the minute. Give me a shout if you need one.

I have a compression gauge as well if you want to check the head gasket - possible cause of zee White smoke. These old cars do try our patience and wallets from time to time.

Thanks Paul, I have found 2 of the things this morning and I think one of them was working. I have a compression gauge somewhere out in the garage too but I'm hoping the smoke was a combination of it being freezing and the unburnt getting into the exhaust.

              Cheers.

Went out just there and started it and it ran well, so took it a wee spin and got couple hundred yards before it went again. Just swapped over the POS and it is indeed a faulty one. It's the one I replaced last time I think but I do have a spare V6 one which I'll fit after a cup of tea here but it looks like we could be in business

Bear in mind that you have 1 spare POS channel. (2 x 3 POS = 5 cylinders + 1 spare)
If the unused one is not broken, it will be cheaper (and possibly easier?) to just rewire the connecter to use the spare channel and not the broken one.

                        Gunman,

I know you've fixed it, but was looking for something else and just saw this photo so thought I'd stick it in your thread for others who might find it useful.

                        Kind regards.

That "photo" was one I had posted to help describe the current flow through the POS (which is more of a switch than an amplifier). Labelled with pin numbers, it became part of this more detailed POS post:
