Only basic boost - any ideas?

Hi, after some advice if possible.

My RS2 has decided to give only default boost. It starts and drives fine, nice and smooth.

I have checked all the pipework, the N75 valve and then had the codes read using VAG COM.

    The codes are :

    00513 Engine speed no signal
00515 Cam sensor short to plus - intermittent

The contacts / connections for these two all look good. However doesn't the ecu need the engine speed signal to even start? It starts and runs fine.

    Any ideas much appreciated

first error is not a problem, but you might have problems with cam sensor.....

      Hi Pete,

The speed sensor code is normal if you use vagcom with the engine not running. Only two weeks ago i had the same problem with my 94 S2, it was running fine but would go into limp mode and restrict the boost to 0.5 bar. I scanned to car and had the same fault codes as you, so i fitted a new Cam position sensor (hall sender) as audi call them, which sorted out the problem, its quite a common fault. Its found just under the cam pulley and you have to remove this to gain access, abit of a pig, took me two hours to fit. Theres loads of info on the forum for changing the Cam sensor (hall sender), have a look. It cost me £115 trade from Audi and worth every penny when the boost was back to 1.4 bar.

      Goodluck, cheers Gav.

        Thanks GavS2.

Did you test your sensor and compare to the new one? If so any readings I could check?

Hi mate, no i just changed it straight away, they are quite a common fault it would seem. But when i got the fault code it said exactly as yours does with the same description. I have had alot of electrical parts giving up on my S2 in the past 8 months or so. I have changed both coilpack amplifiers within two months of each other, the N75 valve and then the Hall sender plus a MAF for good measure. I guess there getting old, but we still love em.

Change the Hall sender and she be back to full boost.

          Cheers Gav

If you have cam sensor error in ECU, it will not go past 0.4 bar.
Get rid of that error - either by checking wiring and making sure it's fine or if you are sure it's not the wiring, changing the sensor and your car will happily boost again.

Short Cuts to replacing a G40 Cam Position Sender

Pete: This procedure is for an AAN but I am sure that you can adapt it to an ADU (or ABY):

Btw, make sure all your marks line up and your timing belt is not 1 tooth wrong.
That error can happen in that case as well...

I would say Yes, based on the photos of the cam sprocket and the crank damper. On my car (93 UrS4 AAN) the flywheel mark does not line up in the viewing port with the cam and damper are lined up properly.

Check the wiring loom too As per other posts, the 0.4 bar is due to this fault. You can replicate the same 'limp home mode' by unplugging the cam sensor with the engine running - it will not boost!

Guess who's cambelt was 1 tooth out...

Actually only 1/2 a tooth and I went the wrong way, lesson learnt.

Thanks to everyone for there input. Going to buy the hall sensor anyway, for when it fails...
