Crank locking tool / will it work??

    Hi,

I have been studing photographs, drawings and comments about the Vag tools 2084 and 3256.
From what I have seen, I understand that the following design should work.
Could you help me checking my drawing and measures?

    Many thanks,

There is a bespoke flywheel looking tool that someone made on here. It bolts in where the stater motor is and locks the teeth from there.

This is my version i do not have the locking key in the front pulley so this is the only way i can lock the crank. Credit to D-Jones as i copied his idea

I'm still not convinced that this is the way to do it. The Audi tool is designed so it locks the pulley, not the crank. If you lock the crank, when you torque up the pulley bolt it will try and turn the pulley, and shear the key on the cambelt pulley. I know a lot of people have done it this way and got away with it, but why risk it?

I dont understand why it would try to turn the cambelt pulley? The bolt goes in to the crank so it will only turn as much as that allows. its not like your using the pulley to tighten the crank bolt.

The cambelt pulley is bolted to the main pulley, the friction of the bolt head turning against the pulley will naturally try and turn it, no?

Well it seems to work Andy, and when I had my front pulley balanced they removed the front locking key from it. Now when I looked into building my tool there were already ones made that lock the fly wheel so its a toss up at best.

But for me I can't use a front tool so I have no choice.

They did the same on mine when it was balanced, but I swapped back to my old one so I could use the Audi tool.
I'm not disputing the fact that your method works, but we all know how fragile the std Audi cam pulley is and I personally would not risk it.

I see what you mean, your referring to what happens before the bolt is completely tight... Yeah im understanding what your saying now

                            crank locking tool

If you lock the flywheel you will not only stress the cambelt woodruff key and pulley, but also all the torque will stress the entire crank. Now, that is maybe a minor problem i don´t know but if for example the crank is newly balanced, is ith worth risking it with torqueing throught it?, the torque you apply when tightening is not exactly the same as when the engine is running. I´m no expert in how torque impacts on metal but i would choose the pulley locking tool before flywheel locking.

I had a contact who made the tool on the picture for me in a cnc machine a few years back. I can ask if he can do some more if someone is interested, just pm.

Its just the same as if your starter runs when the car is in gear maybe even less.
And please do not for get that the ring gear for the starter is heat shrunk to the flywheel so this will give before anything else major.
