    REALLY tight sump plug

Has anyone come across a really tight sump plug? Im using a 3ft breaker bar and still cant get it to shift...Really dont want this one rounding or stripping the thread from the sump.

I had this when I first got mine, it's a common problem. Put a snug fitting ring spanner on it and give it a sharp tap with a hammer.

I had this issue last weekend, mine rung and wouldn't shift.

Bought an hole saw bit, that was just a bit bigger than head of the nut - a 17mm, broke off the normal central locating drill bit and put the serrated "pipe" over the sump plug and effectively drilled into the flange of the sump plug which made the plug itself loose enough to open with a vise grips.

Worked out very well for what I thought might be a right pita. Have to buy a new sump plug, but a lot better than having to take off the sump.

      HTH.

Buy a Fumoto valve, I never want to have to go through this again, before I had one I had to drop the car on the breaker bar to get it to crack the plug open

              Will,

It's a common problem because of two dissimilar metals that jut weld themselves together. When I first tried it I (stupidly) tried to use the weight of the car and a breaker bar to try and break it loose. Nearly had all of the weight on it before I actually thought what I was doing and decided that i wanted to live/not break the car.

I would recommend you apply some heat to the plug, it should come loose that way and then fit a fumoto valve. Do you have an undertray? I've always been a bit concerned that a fumoto valve used without an undertray could be a bit exposed.

              Good luck.

Helps to not over torque when fitting. Feels like 'not enough' when fitting but it is

fumoto valve? Ive never heard of these?!

No under tray as yet but it wont be hitting the road without one.

I'll try heat and tapping it tomorrow...the pub called tonight

FWIW I had a sump bung in the S6 (same as your car tho') that had the nut part broken off. I got a 32mm nut and welded it to the sump bung by pool welding it in the middle. By the time it was welded the heat had run right through the bung and it took little more than the weight of the spanner to loosen it.

In my case it transpired that the little copper washer had been ignored by the previous owner.

Do a search on these, its a little valve that screws in and when you need to change the oil you just move a lever and it allows the oil to drain out.

Sounds like a good buy. I'll see if I can get one. Hopefully not a new sump too! I'll get the heat gun out tomorrow

                              Good tips above:
Socket on a breaker bar, assistant applying some force, shock the socket/bar with a few good blows from a hammer- job done.
This is a common thing nowadays ally sump/steel plug- impact/buzz gun works too- but you have to have a good one that stops instantly when you release the trigger or you get covered in hot oil!!!!
and yes i do this for a living!!
You try removing a steel sump plug from an ally sump that some donuts loctited on!!

                              Time to use the BFH!!!
