    Mysteries of Pin 37 revealed

I was looking for info regarding whether *ALL* (worldwide) UrS4's had Check Engine Lights and bumped into this very interesting explanation of the Holding Relay (in the ECU) and what it does with the power it puts out through Pin 37. This post is specifically directed at Paul N. and Dmitri (prj). Hope it helps (if you didn't already have it squirreled away)

I guess some people like to share and others don't.

This info would have been useful to bring when we were trying to sort out the guy doing the AAN swap into a B3 chassis and you, Paul and I were trying to help. I know Paul knew about the power through 37 to the injectors etc but how that was done was not clear. Now it is.

Okay. Seems like the CEL was a North American thing. That said, I think it is still possible to check the blink codes by using an LED light across some of the K and L test terminals.

My MY1995 S6 was without MIL(CEL) pin in the ECU connector. I added and connected it to the empty Check Engine slot above aux dials. AFAIK from the factory only North American cars got the MIL light, but the worst case scenario for adding it is soldering 2 wires and adding pin to ECU and inserting the bulb into the dials (on AAN/ABY/ADU at least).

Well, I did not delve into that so much... it's not about keeping stuff a secret, I just don't have time these days to post the stuff.

Good info. I presume Paul N. is away because he probably would have pointed us to that procedure earlier in this thread if he was around.

                      Thanks Mouse.

Curiously - yesterday morning I had a 3B ECU on the bench and have captured the internal circuit that drives pin 37. Will post it later guys - its pretty straight forward.

@Dave - I had no idea it was so well explained in that motronic book - I have a slightly different version of the book you showed there - but it is covered. Anyway - will formally capture the schematic later today hopefully - is just scribbles in a book right now.

                            That will be helpful.

Speaking of helpful, could you please comment on the thread I started regarding blinking out fault codes. I had no idea you had a procedure to add a CEL/MIL to a 3B. I am curious to know your experiences with AANs and ABYs. In North America, the California requirement spread to all C4 UrS4/S6s, i.e. we all have CELs that can be used to get the blink codes. I am now understanding that very few C4 UrS cars in the rest of world have CELs. However, some (?) only need a bulb installed. Others may need additional wiring similar to your 3B instructions.

                            TIA

As promised... the circuit... ECU chip S220 controls a switched path to 0V to energise the relay. I don't yet know if software is involved in that decision - I doubt it - more likely hardware timer driven when key turned on/off.

This is common to 3B, AAN, ABY & ADU.
