block and Head waterways vs gasket....

A quick question, what is the science behind my new MLS headgasket not matching the waterways in the block and head for size? Clearly the holes in the gasket will restrict flow, more so on the right of the engine than the left, but why?

The old original gasket matched the waterway size (or had rotted to the same size!).

Probably an obvious answer, just intrigued....

I asked this same question not too long ago, basically its to control an even flow of the coolant around the head

helps the coolant stay longer in the head and maybe reduces turbulence thus providing better cooling....a thought....
