    BT for AAN

sigh...getting way too many mixed reviews on the turbo choice...everybody has a different opinion so let's put it all together...

built AAN - JE pistons (8.5:1), Scat rods, head studs etc...it will be attached to a 1.8T FWD tranny (so lower drivetrain losses) and will be powering a rally car (so need quick spool and not necessarily top power)

this is what I have gathered so far:

    GT3071r - too big
    GT28rs - too small for the I5

when I ordered my rods 034 suggested the GT2871, but a few people have commented that its a surge monster on the I5 or that the tuning for that turbo is too conservative...

ideally I'd like to keep my stock manifold and the wastegate but that's not a deciding factor...any word on Bullseye? Holset? I'm open to suggestions...

    let's hear it...

Who said a 3071 is too big - what is the application and target power / torque level ?

Stock AAN EX manifold is restrictive compared to RS2 item or more exotic aftermarket specials.

034 told him that then said get a 2871 on one of their generic maps

How much do you want to spend? HTA turbos be a good choice or 3071r or keep it kkk with k26/k27

Will the rally car run a restrictor?

If it will run a restrictor, 3071 is way too big.

Owen Developments do a 3071r with a restrictor for Rally cars no problem

            Not convinced by that, sorry.
Depends on the restrictor size as well I guess, but on a small restrictor the 3071R will not provide a good powerband, GT28RS (but have fun mapping) or even stock turbo might be better suited. Maybe K24-7400, but need more people to run that first.

Anyway, this is assuming there IS a restrictor.
Maybe there's not. Then forget everything I said.

            EDIT:
            OP, is there a restrictor?
Are you using stock or aftermarket ECU?
            Can you run antilag?

no restrictor on the intake - 2.5" limit on the exhaust...that's all

they suggested 2871 would be better for faster spool up...since the car is FWD they said the 3071 would be an overkill...

so far I'm looking at approx 1700$ for the turbo 'kit' and about 1000$ for the chip/injectors/WG spring...

there are no specific HP numbers - I need a driveable quick car...there won't be many straight lines to use HP so I need fast spool and good predictable torque curve...

Ok. Then 3071R is too big I think.

                Try the K24-7400?

Get some RS2 or larger injectors, and RS2 exhaust manifold.
I'll be able to provide a chip for that in a month as well, and not for silly prices.

I agree that 3071R will be overkill on FWD car, I think you will just spin the wheels all the time in every gear and it won't be very controllable.

I would say go with the 3071. It spools fast enough, if you want faster spool but not well up-top then take the 0.63 AR housing. If you want better traction down low (and with the FWD that is the subject) then go for the 0.82 AR.

If you want less torque down low then simply turn the boost down on lower revs.
                  Go Holset or Go RS4

o The quantity of Turbochargers and/or Superchargers installed on the engine must be OES. Example: An engine originally equipped with one turbocharger may not be upgraded to two or more turbochargers.
o Turbochargers and Superchargers are free.
o Boost controllers and waste gates are free.

o Inlet restrictors may be implemented by the organizer to regulate Level 3 vehicle performance.
o The organizer will provide eight (8) months notice as to the requirement and size of the restrictors. Note: Inlet restrictors are not anticipated for the 2010 event.
                    6.10.4 Exhaust System

All exhaust flow must pass through this pipe. If the vehicle is not equipped with a catalytic converter, the pipe diameter will extend to the muffler or to the end of the tail pipe, whichever occurs first.
o The pipe shall not be welded to the turbo exhaust port. The pipe shall be bolted to the turbo exhaust port.
o It shall be possible to unbolt this pipe for inspection by the scrutineer as required.

Good luck with torque steer and other fun with a monster engine coupled to FWD.... doesn't sound ideal to me - especially for rally.

You dont think ~300bhp is enough for FWD ?

Seriously - if you are constrained by FWD then you'd be best investing time & effort into making the chassis the best it can be... the last thing you want is a turbo good for 450bhp on a drag strip when in actual fact - a nicely remapped stock turbo will give you less lag, better throttle response and much more usable boost & perfomance for a rally application. The uprated rods, lighter flywheel and such will make the engine rev sweeter - don't waste a penny on exotic turbos and wastegates here.

I'd go with stock turbo - probably with a 360 degree bearing. RS2 EM is nice to have but no big deal. Stock WG is fine too - 3" exhaust will be plenty big enough too...

SAVE your money friend - monster turbo just not required here... spend that money on suspension & brakes.

valid suggestion - I've considered it but the old turbo's got ~300k on it so I'm not very excited about bolting it back on...even if I was to buy a stock new turbo it would cost me probably the same which is the only reason I'm looking to upgrade...
