OK.I thought the gauge reading came from the same connector? Anyway, do I need to recalibrate through VAGCOM do you think? Could I have got a faulty sensor? nothing else has changed before changing temp sensor
advice appreciated

There is nothing you can calibrate in vag-com...
If the temperature rises and falls correctly in vag-com, then everything should be fine.
As for the gauge - no idea about it, perhaps someone can chime in, who has dealt with this - I'd need to open up some wiring diagrams and look what gets wired where.
I know my car has at least three temp sensors...
ECU and therefore VAGCOM gets water temperature from G62 - white bodied connector at rear of head with 2-pins.
Water temp GAUGE gets its signal from the multi-function temp sensor (MFTS) in the water rail - much bigger 4-pin or 3-pin package depending on the vintage.
Neither to be confused with water temp thermoswitch for afterrun pump - also in the water rail - one or two pins - cannot remember.
