Well there's always that temptation of going for something exotic. I'm trying to stick to OEM or OEM+ spec to keep this thing as true to original as possible; I'm waiting to see what Hoffer is able to get in terms of RS2 hybrids - OEM RS2 spool with 400hp and bags of torque would make me very happy.
I may stick with the current turbo for a bit now though - I would rather replace the cracked and blowing RS2 EM now and do the turbo later, than the other way round... would buy me a bit of time to further explore my options.
You can make about 430 hp from a K26/K27.
Spool will be 100-200 RPM later than on the RS2 turbo, not noticeable much...
Price of the K26/K27 is a lot lower though.
Alternatively you could try a HX35, which is very similar to the 3071R, albeit cheaper and rebuildable. That'll require you to sell your current manifold and get one with a T3 flange though.

The 3071R will suit you just fine as well.
If your head is ported, then it's possible that there won't be any surge issues.
