I'm looking at building a 16V G60 engine and have been told that early Quattro Turbo pistons are a direct swap into the KR block, are the pistons in these the same as S2 pistons?
If you are talking about pistons from the UR quattro 10v engines, either WR or MB, then these are very different. The only pistons from the UR quattro which are the same as the S2 will be those from an 20v RR engine, which is similar to the S2 3B engine. I think I'm right in saying that all turbo 20v 5cyl(except Sport quattro) use the same piston. Well according to the KS catalogue they do!
The 10v engines used a shorter rod than the 20v and with a bigger piston pin, so even if the bore size is the same, the pistons will vary dimensionally. Not up on VW stuff but I guess it is the 20v turbo pistons you want, either from an RR(quattro), 3B/ABY/ADU(S2/RS2) or AAN(S4/S6). I'm afraid you will have do do some more homework on this one!
Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I'm sure it's the pistons from the 20v I need. I had a look on ETKA and you're correct in saying that the RR and S2 engines use the same pistons (part # 034 107 065 M)
How difficult is it get hold of these pistons second hand, as I imagine new ones are quite expensive?
All 20v pistons are not the same. As the rods are the same lengt in all 2226ccm and 2309ccm engines the piston must be different size (81 bore vs 82,5 bore). Noting that the 160hp 2.0 20v has 81mm bore and other pistons.
Bigger bore is used in N/A 20v engines and smaller in turbo applications.
Any 20v turbo (3B RR ABY AAN ADU) 81mm piston should be great in your 16V if you're going to use boost as you are.
10v pistons are totally different shape and some of them probably makes close acquaintance with the inlet valves if fitted.
You should be expecting CR of 9.3 if the combustion volume in KR head is the same as it is in the 20v turbos.
