    Oil fetish :-(

Well, hose of you at Combe this weekend will have noticed that my car was using more oil than i would have liked I got through about 1 litre doing 3 sessions on track. Im kinda hoping its a problem with the PCV system, but Im not sure.

I pulled the PCV valve off it today, how should these operate?? I see its marked K and F on the outlets, which way round do they go for a start. Also how does the valve work? Vacuum or boost??

Please help me, Im dreading having to take the engine back to bits

Im not exactly sure how the PCV system works but i think the valve should let gasses pass going from the block to the maf-turbo hose and not the other way.
which way round did you have it?
i could see the smoke coming from your car when i was following you on the track.
aren't you going to fit a catch tank?

work this one out...i checked my oil level yesterday morning before i set off to combe and it was dead on the maximum.
i checked it again after i'd been on track and it was about 2mm above the maximum.
so my car seems to produce oil when it gets thrashed..lol

I have doing some research and have pulled the PCV system apart on the car. Its full of oil. Basically there are two valves in the system. One is a pressure valve that only opens under boost and this is working OK. The other is the one that has two ports and is connected to the outlet on the block.... This is wide open under low boost/vacuum conditions allowing the oil fumes to be burnt in the engine. But under higher boost, the suction from the turbo should pull on a diaphram inside making the 'hole' a lot smaller so that it doesnt suck the oil from the sump.

I think this is the problem with the car. I cant test this valve as it means sucking on in quite hard and considering the amount of oil in it, its a big no. They are £10 so i will buy one and try that. All i can think is that the diaphram has split and is not pulling it shut.

          Martin,

If you car can reproduce that trick with fuel, I would like first refusal! Was one of the previous owners a certain Mr J Christ?

              Tom,
I hope it is something as simple as the valve you are talking about. Unfortunately, like my GP who insists on treating the symptoms rather than the cure, I would guess ring seal. I believe the car was consuming a lot of oil on the way down from Scotland before you gave it death round Combe.
I overheard you say you were going to perform a leakdown test. That might provide the answer. I suppose a re-ring is a cost effective method of getting the engine running again, especially in a car that ain't going to see much "action". When I heard about the other upgrades, I thought it would be a matter of time before the next weakest link was exposed.
Lets hope its that pesky valve!

what kind of oil are you useing for running in you can´t use the castrol 10w60 as a run in oil,you must use any kind of half syn when running in ore you won´t bed the rings in and it will use oil,my engines haf always used oil in the bedding in period, and the when it´s woren in there is no problems at all,it´s impossipol to run in/get it beddet in if you use full syn oil,you will have to run 5ooo miles if you do.
                  hope you find the problem.

I have been using a 15/40 non synthetic oil for 1000miles. Then changed to 5/40 fully synthetic

Tom - I just remembered Mark thought his car was smoking a bit and he thought it might be his turbo. Maybe you should ask him how he bedded the engine in, how long it was glazing the bores before running etc. He had a lowish compression on his tests he did - ( 9 Bar IIRC). Do you want me to do a compression test on mine?

My car only ran for as long as me to check nothing was leaking before I took it out and drove it under load for the first 20miles/20minutes it ran. This was on a decent mineral oil with low boost. It only sat idling for a couple of minutes max before I took it out to try and get some pressure behind the rings to make them bed in.

There is definitely 2 schools oif thought on this and I used the drive it hard for the first few miles one - it made sense to me - and Mihnea thought that was a good way of doing it.

The other thing is a duff VSOS like what Steve had.

What do you think? Not what you want to hear though.

                        hi audiman
i hobe you find the problem, and it´s only minor, like not beddet in ore that valve.

                          Tom,
Following on from what Doug said. The point I was trying to make was re-ringing an engine is a stop gap measure. Even if everything is within factory wear tolerence. Don't forget the factory didn't take into account the fact that you are subjecting that engine to nearly twice the boost pressure.
I guess bore glazing is a possibility, especially if the car was left idling for a long period after the rebuild. I know of one well respected engine tuner who used to rebuild an engine, run it in, and then re-ring it. Bit much for a road car admitidly, but on a competition car, where every little bit counts(and moneys no object) it was worthwhile.
                          Lets hope its something minor.

He has had custom forged pistons i think which were measured up with the bore.....

I believe he used std pistons machined down to lower the comp ratio. I know others have used custom pistons hence "fresh" bores.
