once and for all..crank breather for track AAN

the best and simplest crank breather, thinking about drilling holes in the tube that goes thru the cam cover and lead the fumes into a catch tank/separator, and let the inlet suck some vacuum to it.
lead the crank breather from the block to the same cathtank also. should i let the oil return to the sump and where, heard that reutrning it to the front of the sump would be the best, but where?

pics of a working breather system(for track) and a explanation would be great

Block of the original breather at the back. Block the front exit to the tube that passes through the middle.

Drill 6mm holes evenly spaced in-between the cam lobes not above them otherwise the breather will pick up oil flicked of the lobes.

Run this to an oil seperater either 14-16mm or -8an. Next run a 19mm or -12an to the oil seperater from the original crankcase location. Drain the oil seperater back to sump below the oil level using a 10-12mm or -6an. Make sure you return below the oil level otherwise it acts like a breather and won't drain back properly through the small dia bore.

Take the outlet of the oil seperater to a catch tank with a 19mm or -12an which contains perforated baffles for maximum surface area for condensing any moisture left in the crankcase fumes before returning it into the intake pipe just before the turbo.

Tried and tested with completely dry boost run and no oil loss. Only thing catch tank collects is oil coloured water. Which very rarely needs emptying as so little is collected.

Your evaporation canister either plumb that back into the original intake mani location commiting the crankcase Pvc setup or if you don't mind fuel vapours disconnect the system and block of the intake mani fitting.

so the oem block breather should be blocked and only venting from the head?

drainage to block, oil plug could be a good place? or turbo return? wich way does the engine turn if you stand in front of it, clockwise or counterclockwise?

Block breather = original crankcase location

1 from head.1 from block. Engine turns clockwise. Return near drain plug as far away from turbo as poss.

okok, nice. what do you think of not using the valve etc from the crankcase breather and only use a hose there?
oil drain plug, thinking of drilling and welding a JIC nipple for AN10 there, or maybe use a hose fitting, wold be easy to drain the oil too, no more chance of rounding the plug or damage the treads...just a thought

The one way valve that goes from crankcase breather to the intake you disconnect. Block off, throw in the bin, get rid of. It puts oil into your intake on over run/engine braking. Only recollect evaporation canister. So get rid of t piece and put hose straight from evaporation valve to intake manifold blocking block breather to intake manifold. Block breather goes only 1 place oil seperater.

I use a fumoto valve on the sump plug and welded -6an next to it for oil return from seperater.

Note when doing an oil change using a fumoto valve you always need to leave the valve open for the first 1/4ltr or so until the oil drains clear as the hole will sit a little higher than the bottom of the sump.

Have driven so little with my car after the rebuild so cant tell how my system works. But I have 2 breathers comming from the head with AN12 hoses and one T-piece, both goes to the oil separator. The stock head breather is used and goes to the T-piece with a AN10 hose. Also the stock block breather goes to the separator with a 30mm hose. Oil return goes to the sump with a AN12. I'm not sure if I put a breather filter on the separator output or do I draw a hose to the turbo inlet..?

Are you venting to atmosphere or pulling vacuum using turbo inlet? As the diameter hoses you are using are more suited to atmosphere. Pulling vacuum using turbo you want smaller diameter to keep good air velocity for the seperater to work at maximum efficiency.

Havn't decide yet what I'm going to use. Now it breaths to the atmosphere, have to buy a filter on the output. But was also thinkin of putting a hose to the turbo intake.

i dont know about track, but for high boost street, this is my setup.

should have done this a bit earlier though as now the engine needs a rebuild...
