    Turbo or Engine? Oil burn...

Hi people, I have been driving my UrS4 for about 300km yesterday (Autobahn 130km/h) and burned more than one liter of oil and got blue smoke our the exaust and some from the down pipe at the end of my trip. The new rebuild engine is running fine...the presicion SC61 is not new...
before that I drove the ney engine for 1000km and than changed the oil...everything was fine.

Would you rather say it's the turbo or something wrong with my engine??? Could it even be my turbo?

    Thank you...

Not sure what answer you expect, but:
    1) Measure compression in all cylinders.
    2) Do you have a catch tank on the breather system?
    3) Can you check oil pressure at cold idle? (external gauge, as urs6 does not have one)

I didn't have an expected answer...just wanted an opinion before I take it all apart...I was just really bugged last night...

oil pressure is ok...between 4 and 5 bar...UrS4 has the gauge for it...and you are right the UrS6 doesn't

      thanks so far...

4 and 5 bar when? On hot idle?
If you have between 4 and 5 bar (or basically 5 bar) on hot idle, then you should check the oil pump reduction valve, if it's stuck, oil pressure can go too high, then push oil through the turbo.

And there is no opinion that can be given to you, if you do not provide even basic information...
At the very minimum answer the three questions.

Basically if it is pushing oil through the PCV system one of your piston rings is probably gone, but then that'd show up on a compression test.
        Otherwise it's probably the turbo.

          Hey prj, thanks so far...
well it would be at cold idle as you asked...and a little under 2 bar when hot...so that should be ok...
I'm sorry but I don't have any more info yet...I sure hope it's not a piston ring...
In will know more in the next days and keep you inform...

Well, your oil pressure seems good.
If it's smoking like crazy in vacuum it is probably the turbo.

High oil consumption can be from

Rings - smoke under load, sometimes idle if breather system not upto scratch

Turbo - smoke on idle, under load and coming back on throttle after engine breaking

Guides - smoking on startup, on over run and when coming back on throttle after engine breaking.

Take out the spark plug check if the plugs are wet.

If plugs are wet check if oil sitting ontop of the piston if there is no oil ontop of the piston then the rings are shot. If there is oil ontop of the piston then the guides are shot. This can quite often highlight itself when the bottom end is fresh and guides have not been replaced as the extra vacuum created on the downstroke of the piston sucks oil through the guide.

If the plugs are dry take of the downpipe and check if there is oil on the exit of the turbo which will confirm turbo seals.

Hey Guys, well...took of the turbo last night. Oil everywhere pretty much...most of it dripping out the compresser-wheel...sucks...sh....t
but I sure hope that is all there is...we will see...had enough trouble with it so far..

didn't check spark plugs yet, but I'm sure they are all black from the oil...I'll let you know...

so what makes more sence? rebuilding the old one or buying a new one?

                  thanks so far

have a deep look at your crankcase breather system, if your running oem breather(pcv) than it could be the issue. it doesnt mean your turbo or piston rings are bad, during acceleration the oil goes to the back of the engine and theres were you got the block breather.

                      Hey x6rs,
that's a good idea also. The Crankcase breather is what I checked first, when I realized oil was gone. It is all sealed and not the OEM...it's open with a little filter and not connected to the air-intake-system...so I got that covered I think...
and it smokes and has been burning oil all the time, not just und acceleration/load...

Very useful thread this, as my oil consumption has definitely increase recently. At the tops of hills is when it smokes, what would this point to? Just now having taken it steadly up a hill in 4th I got to the brow and it beltched out a huge plume of white smoke. I've been keeping an eye on it and it doesn't seem to smoke at other times.

but burned oil smoke should be black/dark/blue or so, not white, right? Mibe at least is. Check you water, too!!! Head gasket?

I would say your rings are worn and it is pushing oil out of the breather.
The reason it increased is because your car was running about 1.2 bar boost, and now it's running upto 1.8 bar.
