the hp levels may not have much to do with it. More compression, you run less timing, but may get good hp numbers regardless. im told that more compression will give faster spool and better response off boost. Knock will be a limitation though. Having said that, newer audi turbocharged engines have 11:1 compression (sure FSI may have something to do with it) and yet get big turbo mods and run 1.8bar happilyComment

hammer and shed way to check valve to piston clearance
-> a piece of wire down the spark plug hole, into the recess area and crank it by hand then measure the thickness.

I thank you all for your replys, and it seems to me that my problem is not so much cr but this minimum head measerment. This is the crushal thing, and the answer I cannot find.
RWD19t,I can't thank you enough for your quick replys, and I understand what you meen about the I5 being a none tolerrance engine, and I fear you may be right, but I still cannot find Audi,s reason for stateing this minimum measurement, yet not telling us why.
Someone must know how to find the answer
In the mean time thanks for the help I realy need it, just seems its one brick wall after another at the moment, quite easy to lose the faith right now.Comment

When assembling any engine a builder will check block holes bolt lengths and head thickness. To ensure the headbolts don't bottom out. If they do run studs problem solved.
As for valve to piston clearance this should be no less than 1.5mm at tdc with headgasket compressed. Again an experienced builder will know how to check this. So in the grand scheme of things if the valve piston clearance is good and you are running studs then you have no issues.
Normally if someone is running adjustable timing pulleys you would also check at what cam degrees the valves go below the 1.5mm clearance so you know where your limits are when dialing in the cams.
