    MAF function

According to Audi motronic documentation the ECU will use throttle position and MAP sensor to calculate required air/fuel mixture when the MAF has a fault condition. It must be possible therefore to remove MAF from the equation altogether. Has anybody (Mihnea etc) done any work on this? We have a motronic (coil per cylinder) on our 10v urq's without MAF plugged in, works fine

The MAF is the *main* load input for the Motronic system and it is adviseable to let it plugged in.

Many parameters such as idle speed regulation, timing advance, fuelling, etc etc etc rely on a proper MAF output, and removing the MAF simply defaults the ECU to a mode where it will read TPS as the main load input. So far I haven't been able to get good results in terms of driveability with no MAF connected so I haven't even bothered trying to remove it.

I know the MAF is a big issue when you have a massive turbo and no room to fit the MAF (cone airfilter on the turbo's inlet being the best example) but for the Motronic's sake, leave the MAF where it is, it is an excellent component.

In order to remove the MAF so the system doesn't notice anything, you have to run a Speed/Density converter hooked up to the ECU as a MAF, which translates manifold pressure and intake temperature into a fake MAF signal. This is a very poor solution IMHO, because all Speed-density systems only try to get an idea of the air flow going into an engine based on conversions, which is cr@p IMHO.

Mihnea Is there any benefit in 'upgrading' the MAF on a standard tune RS2. If there is why? and which one would you use?
Mine has a 968CS MAF which shares the part no with the OEM. But I have heard of 928 or M5 MAF being options.
And finally what about a 968 turbo MAF, if different from standard 968.??
      Just curious
