Alternator belt just let go on my 94 80 TDi. Im sure ive a spare at home and if not ive other cars there to go get one.

So question is, will it run the 30 odd miles with no alternator????

Super busy day at work, cant be 4rsed with this! lol

    Many thanks in advance guys

Keep your lights, wipers and anything else heavy turned off like fans etc. 30 miles at ~30mph is one hour operation.

Running the engine needs lets say 15A through ECU & such worst case, then maybe 10A for the fuel pump in the tank. So thats a 25Ah requirement.

If you have a decent battery with even 60Ah capacity (stock S2 is much more like 90Ah) then you *SHOULD* be fine for that journey with plenty of margin.

The only other advice I can give you is to get REALLY friendly with any stocking wearing ladies (or men) at work - a discarded stocking makes for a great emergency drivebelt

I doubt you'd be able to make thirty miles without the battery taking a charge. I wouldn't take the risk.

30mins of engine running shouldnt drain a healthy 60Ah battery

The journey could be made, assuming the battery is in good health with a full charge to begin with.
The jouney needs to be done with the minimum of delays too of course.
I had to make a trip similar to this before when the brushes and slip rings were past their best.

Even refraining from using all the larger power consumers as you suggest, it wasn't long before I was seeing the speedo gauge no longer work and the indicators fail and so on. But I still made it.

So yes Al, you can certainly make the trip but just be aware of the pitfalls before you set out.

I will share the story of the day I bought my s2....
I went to Armagh (North of Ireland)
the car had a alternator problem
so i made a deal with my E30 325i touring bought 2 60 Ah batteries in alffords
and drove at night to Dublin 135km or 84mls with the lights turned off most of the time
            behind a truck
the volt gauge was was always dropping and when it it a bit less than 8v the car just died.
time to swap the batteries and continue the journey
I think you will be ok

Glow plugs only activate on cold days until motor is up to temp... already seen its a diseasel... no sparks and presumably an ECU controlled mechanical pump so it looks OK to me - IF your battery is good...

If your lady friend wont remove any garments for you, maybe she will lend you a battery ? LOL

Few years ago i bought a 20vcq from the west coast of the scottish highlands, was driving it back home(480 miles) when the alternator fell apart about 80 miles from home, managed to get onto my drive just as it cut out. With an 80 tdi not having an electric fuel pump you may find it could go a lot longer, but don't take my word for it

This happened to me when I had an 80 tdi, I reckon it should be fine for that length of journey. However worth checking that when the alternator belt went it didn't snag the water pump belt/pully at all. Mine wound itself around the water pump, fortunately I was able to cut it off using a trusty leatherman and made my journey home.

I've done 60+ miles in the CQ20v with no alternator belt, at night too. By the time i got home i had candle light illumination, just enough for other people to see me basically, and a missfire under load but it made it. A diesel will go much further without the drain of an ignition system.

Have a look in the petrol stations, some of them have emergency belts, if you haven't seen one they are like a piece of tube that you cut to length and join together.

                            like this one,
