vw sharan fly by wire pedal replacement, how to?

mrs new ( to us) tdi Sharan playing silly ******s on hols!
Steepest hill we needed to pass in Wales n the thing died on me doing 70 in the fast lane.
rev counter stuck at 1100rpm, depress pedal and nowt happens so switch off and starts and runs ok now
put on vag com when we got back and says pedal sensor sporadic fault so...
    how to change it?
is it just remove and refit or do i need to re vag it to set it up?
think i ll change th emaf at same time as its a bit limp and came up with a fault too, good job car was cheap

Is a complete assambly....pedal and sensor...
Remove battery leads...change the pedal...plug the sensor...plug the battery and ready...
Maibe the error will be there..but just to let you know it had a problem

When you say it died on you do you mean that the engine cut out altogther or that it lost most of it's power - and then when you restarted it ran fine again.
We have a 2002 Sharan 115TDI that does a similar thing from time to time. It usually happens on the same hill, suddenly you lose most of the power and it won't pull. The engine is still running and sounds normal but there is just nothing there when you push the acceterator. You can still drive it but it feels like it's running on half the power. Turn off the ignition for a second or two and restart it and it's back to normal.

It doesn't happen that often but I did find some stuff on the net about this. Apparently it's a known issue with the VW PD engine, something to do with the variable vanes sticking on the turbo which causes the engine to go into 'limp home mode'. If it is driven fairly gently quite a lot, giving it a good blow out once in a while can help stop it.
What year and engine is it, I'm not sure the earlier ones are fly by wire - I don't think our 2002 is but we also have a 2006 140TDI in the family which is fly by wire as far as I know but so far hasn't had the same problem.

                Its a 1999, 110 bhp version
VAGcom came up with accelerator pedal sensor fault
It sits revs at 1100 but has no go whatsoever! Engine is running ( doesn t cut out) but wont move the car. Nothing happens when pushing pedal to try to rev it
Switch off and restart and it runs fine
It did it 3 times on the mrs yesterday so am getting a new pedal in the morning.
I ve read up on the VNT vanes problem too but diagnosed the pedal and maf even before it was plugged into vagcom!
New maf is only £56 plus vat for a Bosch one from GSF
Then it s off to my mates garage for a flash on the ecu-it still needs more power for overtaking(that s what I ve told her anyway, lol)
