RS2 turbo & EM install on 3B engine

I have a few questions about installing an RS2 turbo & exhaust manifold onto my 3B engine. The engine is stock, but the ECU has been upgraded by Mihnea. My first question is, can these components simply be bolted on without any other modifications or does the ECU need to be re-tuned? What kind of hp & torque numbers can be expected just with installing these two items? What is the best price out there for these parts? Finally, are there alternative turbos that can be had for less $$$ but similar gains?

    Thanks in advance!

    Ben,

if your ECU has been optimized by Mihnea for the use of the K24 turbocharger, then installing the RS2 turbo and manifold without remapping will probably cause you to run into surge line at low rpm in some driving conditions.
The "homefry" for the K24 setup, IIRC, was sayed to give full boost (~1.45 bar) as low as 2400-2500 rpm, while you cannot expect the 7200 cold side not to surge at this kind of boost and rpm.

Apart from that there is no problem in using this hardware. You just wont take advantage of the full potential until remapped (and upgraded injectors, IC etc.). You should probalby get a sligtly higher mid to high rpm power due to less restrictive turbine and expecially for the higher efficiency the 7200 cold side will have @ 1.5 bar boost compared to the K24 (therefore denser charge).

I think a fair price for a good used RS2 turbocharger is in the range of 500-700 Euros, depending on mileage, and 400-450 Euros for the EM.

As for alternatives, the GT28RS should have comparable flow and boost potential, while I still prefer the 7200's map for having lower surging limitations in the midrange of our engines.
Not a cheap option, anyway, while being ball bearing might give some advantage in spooling up and boost treshold.

Cheaper options might be the widely used (expecially in the US) T3/T04E versions. The closest to the KKK K7200 are the 40 and 46 trim, but have much worst surge line than the KKK unit.

You can bolt them on straight on, but you will need to have the ECU sorted out again. Avoid using full throttle at low engine speeds until it is re mapped. The exhaust and pipes etc will all still bolt up in the right place BTW.

Yeah everything bolts straight on you will need shorter manifold studs in some places, but they can be cut down....

I would advise replacing all the manifold studs anyway. Get RS2 ones as they are different also use new nuts

How about RS2 turbo & EM in a completely stock engine with stock ecu?

I have the same questions that Archiboy24 had :

Can these components simply be bolted on without any other modifications or does the ECU need to be re-tuned?
What kind of hp & torque numbers can be expected just with installing these two items?

You wont get any gain from just bolting it on. That will probably make it worse to drive. ECU will have to be mapped to get any gain from the car and also to ensure that it it doing any damage to the engine.
