    Good Turbo Maintenance Practice

    Can anyone give tips and advice on good turbo maintenance practice?

    Things like:
    What are the main modes of failure of the tubo;
    What are the symptoms of these modes;
    Should I be checking oil flow throught the turbo periodically;
    Should I be thinking about a scheduled rebuild/refurb at some mileage or age;
    Anything else?

    Thanks all,
    JB

    The killers of turbos are cheep oil, not doing oil changes when due, running issues / bad tune making high EGT and shutting down the engine when the turbo is very hot, this causes oil carbonization, our cars have an after run pump to cool the turbo if it is hot when shut down to prevent this however it is always good practice to drive the last few minutes off boost to allow the temp of the turbo to drop before switching off.
    The other thing you can check is if the after run pump is actually working, just because you can hear it doesn't mean it is pumping water as it has a magnetic coupling from the motor to the impeller and I have had 2 pumps that had seized impellers and on both of them the motor was still running giving the impression that all is well when in fact it was not doing anything.
