after-run system questions... paul? can you comment on this?

I attempted to trigger the after-run system out on my coupe and I couldn't get it to trigger via the turbo thermoswitch. I connected Terminal 6-8 and it the turbo motor works. Actually to be honest I hear it when I turn the ignition.

But is this completely correct? With the key out, and that relay pulled it should turn the tcp motor on? When you jump the two terminals on the thermoswitch?

    Thanks
    Josh

This means I am going to have to go digging for critters and check out all my wiring. Not that I haven't been for the past 5 hours

Josh, i had the same problem, it just wouldnt work when the engine was turned off hot, i wanted it to trigger at about 80deg for piece of mind, but i think it wont trigger till well over 90, so ive bypased the switch with a blade fuse so it now works whenever the ignition is turned off. I very rarely turn it off with a cold engine anyway so i haven't had any problems with flat batteries
a few other people on the forum have done the same, maybe not the most practical solution but it works anyway.
Ben did find another switch from another VAG car which triggered earlier.

      thanks for the link martin

      Highly appreciative.

      What size fuse?

Ok. I put a fuse where the thermoswitch goes and When I turn the ignition I don't here the turbo coolant pump anymore. Pull the fuse and turn the ignition and the turbo coolant pump activates.

      Does this sound normal?

THanks for the replies.. It's getting so close to road worthy and I am trying to settle all these issuses.

I just ordered vagcom and hopefully figuring this out and getting vagscope will give me better peace of mind. Currently running the motor with just the downpipe and spewiing a bit of yuckyness on off throttle wastegate dumps.

        Also

At startup. What is the typical length of idle time before the radiator fan comes on?

        Thanks

20 mins or so for fan to kick in. That fuse can be any size 5A should be fine. When the fuse is in, turn the ignition on then off. Does the fan run then?? If not then there is a problem, it only comes on when the ignition is OFF.

Take a DMM and measure the relay base when the relay is inserted. The thin red wire (IIRC) is the feed from the thermoswitch. When ignition is OFF and there is 12v on the thermoswitch wire both the pump and fan should run. The relay feeds 2 grounds 1 for both. On 3B cars there should be a series resistor behind the fan and there is one extra relay in the fuse box for the slow (extremely slow) 1st fan speed that is used by the after run cooling. As you have an E/S2 there it probably lacks the extra relay etc, just a guess...

And the rest wires on the relay base should be continous ground and ignition +12 IIRC. This way the relay knows not to start the sequence when ignition is ON.

Pump should run briefly when ignition is turned on. Dunno if the thermoswitch feed has any affect on this test sequence. And the test is for the pump only, not the fan.

The problem ended up being a bad splice by me in my home made adapter harness.

I need to use the same concept I use in the construction business etc. Measure twice cut once.

              Thanks guys

              Cheers
