We have made an enhancement so that old threads should now link from search results to the correct thread. This is not yet in place for single post links
Hi, looking to rebuild my 20valve in the new year, car will be Daily driver and a few track days hopefully. I was wondering if members would mine listing there engine spec and how the car drives with the mods and if any problems with the set up. Sorry if this has all ready been done, but I think it would make interesting reading and a very useful data base of engine specs/bhp etc cheers.........mark
Search for some build threads and give them a read through. What you do will depend on what your goal / aspirations are, how true to stock you want to keep it and what your power expectation is. If you posted up what you're looking to achieve I'm sure you'll get some more helpful posts...
You don't tell us what 20Valve engine you have, i.e. NM, 7A, 3B, AAN, ABY or ADU.
Since the NM and 7A are natural aspirated, I assume that is not what you are looking for.
3Bs are similar to the AAN and ABY with respect to upgrades but they have a 2.0 Bar MAP sensor that needs to be changed to at least a 2.5 Bar MAP sensor if not a 3.0 Bar MAP sensor.
An AAN or ABY with the stock 2.5 Bar (250 kPa) MAP sensor can be chipped to about 260 crank HP with no other changes, e.g. MTM Stage 1, MRC Stage 1, IA Stage 3, etc.
An AAN or ABY with an upgrade to 3.0 Bar MAP can be chipped to about 280 crank HP with no mechanical changes. However, adding an RS2 exhaust manifold is not a bad idea (helps to prevent burning No. 1 and 5 exhaust valves). Software suppliers included MTM Stage 1+, MRC Stage 2 and IA Stage 3+. (with the RS2 exhaust manifold, I have seen s/w called MTM Stage 2)
To go to the next level, you need an upgraded exhaust manifold, bigger injectors and a bigger turbo. Adding RS2 exhaust manifold, RS2 green top injectors and RS2 KKK K24-7200 with the 3.0 Bar MAP sensor with software from MTM (Stage 3), MRC (Stage 3), etc. Some people also add the RS2 MAF (others say it is not absolutely necessary). Some people use the Wagner RS2 EVO exhaust manifold and Volvo K24-7400 turbo. All of this is on stock internals. All this will get you about 380 crank HP on stock internals. Upgrading the fuel pump to a Bosch Motorsport 005 or 044 isn't a bad idea.
Other turbo choices at this level include hybrids from 034, e.g. 2871 and 3071, or slight variations of these.
Going above the 380 hp level needs bigger turbos and requires upgrading the rods, cams (e.g. 7A cams), bigger injectors and custom tuning. Some people by this stage (or even one back), have gone to a VEMS stand-alone ECU to help tune their car. This is not for the inexperienced because accidently leaning out your air/fuel mixture will melt your pistons.
Hope that helps. As others have suggested, if you stated your engine and the goals that you have, more specific recommendations/info could be provided.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm new to forums on the whole and how search engines work but thanks for the advice s2 bo on searches now found some very useful threads and info re rods, turbos etc. Forgot to say in first post that it's an aby engine and I suppose i'd like to get over 380bhp. But at this moment in time just gathering info, as engine build will not start till after the ur cut and body work is complete, cut is set for next week end with the help of hamish(g60rallye). So at the moment just getting ideas and as Ross says old build threads are spot on. I just wondered if the forum had an engine spec / turbo size / bhp /etc style thread as a reference? Cheers for the help....Mark.
I think if you are seeing Hamish, he will arm you with more information than you ever need to know. Look him up on here and take a look at his qwesome buld thread.

I'm on the west coast not too far away from you....what do you mean nobody's heard of Bares LOL. You could do with checking out Andy's (Sonic) thread on his RS2 ABY. That'll certainly get the juices flowing. His car was pretty mean when I saw it before the upgrade work!
Cheers,
