    methanol !!!

I just found out I can buy 1000 litres of methanol for £300 !

now methanol needs to be 6.4/1 for stoich so that means you need 2.3 times more methanol than petrol, but this is equivalent of petrol costing 70 pence a litre ! not to mention the massive octane rating, this could half the price of running an S2, am I missing something ?

you will roughly need 50% more volume of alky vs gasoline.

+ running pure methanol on engine parts is not good as they will corrode. They need to be specificaly methanol resistant AFAIK

          This is very true..........

You also need to take in to account that it is very poisonous, much more so than ethanol

you should find a price for ethanol. Then you can mix it with gasoline and make E85.

The only problem with methanol is you can not start a cold engine on it, you must either squirt fuel down
The throttle bodies and fire it on fuel, or as I do in my hill climb car that runs meth pre warm the engine with
A pre heater, so for road use it's a bit of pain. But I mate with a scabby 22b runs 20percent meth in pump
Gas, which after a re map gave more power and helped cool the engine.......mark

Forgot to say Jenny chem sell methanol at £160 for 40 gallon drum with free delivery, that's were I get mine from.
Also if running straight meth it's worth adding a lube to it, like redline alcohol lube, as it's dry fuel and does not lube fuel pumps etc as it passes through them so they wear out quicker......hope this helps....mark

Out of interest how do you get away with running pure meth for long periods ?

A friend of mine runs a drag car, blown methanol big block and if you get 4 runs before the oil is contaminated you've done well, don't get me wrong it gets through 4 gallons from startup to the end of the run so it's pouring it in there at quite a rate!

I know people run a mix of it but I didn't think you could run it neat for long periods ?

At this place I'm looking at you can get a 45 gall drum for £85 , so that makes it only 41 pence per litre . not as good as 30 pence but a bit easer to handle than a 1000 litre IBC, I don't think they would be very impressed if they turned up with an IBC full of methanol at a private residence

As for the wear from methanol a I was not sure how bad it would be but from your input and others here it would seem that 100% would be a no go for a street car, however if you could get away with a 50/50 mix with petrol then that would lower the price of high octane fuel from £1.45 for shell V power down to about £1.00 for even higher octane 50/50 mix . Does anyone know if this 50/50 petrol methanol mix would be acceptable for daily use ?

If this is OK then I can see some bigger injectors coming my way and a remap followed by large suspicious drums tuning up at the house on a 2 week basis . :mischeif:

Johnnybravo it does contaminate the oil as it washes pasted the rings and I have to do an oil change every 2 events which is about 15-20mins running time, you can heat the oil in a pan and burn off the meth, but at the price my engine cost I just change it and put new oil and filter every 2 events. Also forgot to say I run 8 injectors in order to get the volume of meth into the engine in order to produce the power.....mark

Cheers for the info. My mate does burn off the meth, he gets through quite a serious amount of oil in a weekend so I guess it's one way of saving a few quid.

I'd imagine if he had a ecu and injectors his engine wouldn't suffer as bad as it does on the mechanical setup, it's like 8 large taps on wot lol

Is it possible? Does meth mix well with gasoline?

I read somewhere that ethanol need some special treatment to mix well.

If it is posible does the fuel system/lines need upgrade?

I think you would need to upgrade the whole fuel system just to deliver the amount of methanol needed , i'm starting to think a separate tank and pump and injecters and a switchable map could be the way to go, you could start it on petrol warm it up and then switch to meth, the you cold switch back to petrol get it nice and hot to burn off the methanol before you shut it down again. Does anyone who knows about methanol think this would work ? Would running on petrol for a given time get rid of the meth or is the oil just ****ed by it ?
