My Quattro did that once, along with loss of power-
Turned out some dopey git had stuck the air filter too low n it was sucking in rain water!
Is it water/condensation in exhaust ?

Hi - I had this a couple of years back . No loss of power or problems as such, but just a mysterious cloud of white smoke sometimes on startup and /or when running up a hill.

            SOLUTION: here: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...ht=white+smoke

After advice on this Forum I checked the hoses behind the engine and the oil breather. they were really badly gummed up with oily deposits. I also fished out the metal coiled 'firetrap" from one of the hoses and cleaned that off with alcohol. MAKE SURE you buy some jubilee clips of the correct size first, as the spring clips can break/stretch as you take them off.

It took a couple of hours carefully removing the hoses (take a few photos to remind you how to reconnect them) and clean and re-fit... some were a fiddle to refit and took a little jiggling, but it cured the white smoke!
