Has it been run low of oil, I know these modern BM's use oil to take up tolerances. Did they have to do an oil change and then someone forgot to refil it before driving it!
If it happened 5 miles down the road after it was there in the service, it's their problem to take care of, not yours. You should not even be touching it.

they have fecked summit and doing the usual denial stuff to see if you just walk away....I'm sure there are some good legal eagle peeps on here to help...
The last time I heard a noise like this was 2 miles after I had my timing belt chenged.
Turns out they hadn't tightened the crank-pulley bolt properly.
Hope you get it sorted soon Will.

the orginal fault with the car was the owner had been topping it up with the wrong oil (10w60 is what it needs) and they were putting whatever the petrol station was selling in it.
so after a while the car starts missfiring etc etc and cam timming is showing as being retarded.
long story short the wrong oil had sludged in the sump and knacked the vanos high pressure pump.
so changed that which helped but didnt cure the problem.
checked all the vanos pressures replaced high pressure line etc
bench tested the actuators and solenoids.... anyway came to the decision the cam timming had slipped as its not key'd to the shafts.
anyway sent it down to bmw stripped so they could check the timming (which they did under protest)
they checked the timming and said it was right, they then built it back up and did a cycle test on the solenoids which it failed, they fitted new solenoids and it ran smooth again.
i pick it up and it runs out of fuel on my way to the nearest petrol station (3miles away) now it had **** all in when i dropped it off so they havent road tested it they have only ran it.
they say its oil starvation due to the previous fault so they are pretty much washing there hands of it.
it did bout 10-20miles after the sump was cleaned/fresh oil/new vanos pump was fitted with no problems, has no golden sparkes in the oil from say a spun bearing and the engine note is as it should be but the ecu might have altered the cam timming to make it sound like this, as it is in limp mode (3500rpm limit)
ive had a boroscope in the engine on bank two and everything looks as it should, no bent/damaged valves or pistons
trouble with this engine is very few people know anything about it
Does the noise come from the back of the engine? It sounds really loud inside the car compared to outside. Do they suffer with broken flex plates on the autobox similar to the range rover etc.
difficult to say but going off i put £20 in before it banging and its not actually driven anywhere since then and it has nothing left again....... all its done is sit running on idel so yeah maybe
