pour water over the cambelt area ..... oh yes !

    hello boys and girls

Car wouldnt start yesterday, thinking it was maybe hall sensor (as per fault code pulled at mr nugents house) . poured some water over the cambelt area waited 2 mins and she fired !
happened 3 times now and the bottle of evian is getting used rather often.

so looks like it may require changing.............. thougts and experiences please.

Sounds like the tension is too tight?

This is a common fault and the water thing is a temporary fix - get the sensor changed before you have to sit on a petrol station forecourt for 30 mins - it is too embarrassing! And it will only get worse.

It is easy enough to change if you know what you are doing and you HAVE to lock the cam to remove/replace the cam pulley.

Doug could you explain how pouring water on a belt fools the car into starting?

            Learn something new everyday.

            Totally confused!

I would say at a push it would be 1 hour but I think you will get charged 2 hours labour. Any more time than that and they are probably milking it - or not sure of how to do it.

cam cover has to come off
PS pump has to be moved to remove the PS belt in order to remove the cam cover in order to loosen the tensioner.
lock the exhaust cam and undo the cam pulley bolt
              unscrew the sensor,

Fitting is a reversal of above steps - make sure everything is alligned.

I think that is all to it.

The reason it is not starting is because the sensor that reads the TDC from the cam pulley has degraded over time (through age, wear, and dirt) to the point where it is not sending a strong enough signal for the ECU to know the cam is turning. Water poured down the back of the cam cover simply cleans it a bit or changes the temperature of the sender - it is that marginal that the water is enough to make it work - just! It is a bodge that will get you by but that will eventually not work.

Just remembered - if you haev the aux rad - tha will need moved out of the way - so depending on how that is done, it might take a bit longer and get charged for rebleeding the car.
