    Conrod Caps ! A question

Bought a used set of conrods, are the caps matched to the rods ?

Reason i ask is they've been mixed up and not marked prior to removing.

yes. You need to measure every each of them at several points (toghether with the rod to find the same measurement everywhere-"perfect circle") of the radius to find the rod they fit to.

    check also the fitting direction.

You need to kick the muppet seller in the ****s. The rod and cap should have been marked with a punch during disassembly, as shown here:

If you are not shure about getting them right or if you don't have Inside Bore Gauge it is better to get conrods, bearings and crank to a specialist to avoid bearing failure.

you can try fitting the caps and torquing them to spec, and measureing at 0deg 45deg and 90deg and trial and error to see which are which. you still might not be able to tell. your machine shop will be able to measure them more accurately. worst case scenario, the caps can be ground and then the big ends rehoned - all cost.

I'd send them back to the seller for a refund if i was you

Or better, they should be marked as pairs from the factory, like on Pauter rods for example. But of course should be marked by the dissambler if not factory marked.

Another way is to look through a strong magnifier glass and look at the pattern of the machining marks once bolted together, you should find the right matching pair by trial and error.
