Didn't acidburn have an engine for sale?
Also there is one in the for sale section
Personally I'd rebuild over 2nd hand engine if your keeping the car long term you know what your getting but it's more expensive to do if you balance uprate any partsComment

Acidburn's one (I couldn't remember seeing it for sale on here)
Agree a rebuild is best, however for a cheap fix that engine if its ok is probably less than the price of gaskets etc for a rebuild, will swap in a weekend and the car is on the road again. The other engine can then be rebuilt at leisure. Depends if second car, toy, chasing power and depth of pockets etc.If you want a cheap fix there is an ABY engine for £650

Doesn't sound like a cheap fix any way about it... get the facts, see what can be done.
With my Avant I was lucky to get a very good 90k miler, swapped all the good bits from mine and then sold remaining parts. I did all the obvious service items and a new clutch to make some use of having the motor out. This is definitely the most cost effective way of getting back on the road (and quickest)... some help from forum members to the engine in and all was good.
If you're planning to keep it longer term, embark on a rebuild project, can only really do this if you're able to keep the car off the road for a couple of months at least. Think about what you want from the car; hopefully the crank, pistons and block can all be re-used and save a few hundred quid there. But getting it balanced up and rods if you are thinking higher power in the future would be a good investment... otherwise get it stripped, honed, rebuild and set for another 150k

Looking at the state of the shells it's done quite a bit of damage, slight melting of some metal on the big end shell that he took out said the crank is more than likely damaged because of this, small end very scored too. Told me that this doesn't look good for top end either, haven't stripped that yet.
