    Engine out jobs?

OK engine is coming out so might as well do what needs doing whilst it's out, any ideas on what to think about? Already got the fuel lines ready to replace, steering rack is looking a little weepy too so maybe that. What else?

Depends on how many miles but i would consider: -
          • Clutch
          • Sump gasket (if leaking like mine)
          • Engine mounts
          • Gearbox mounts
          • Snub mount

....apart from all the wonderful things you could do to the engine!

Clutch master cylinder? Take steering arms off and make sure they are freed up for next alignment.

Inner steering arm bushes. Might as well remove and unseize, strip clean and re grease, new track rod ends as they are cheap. That can become a slippery slope to a full re bush if you are getting an alignment anyway.

Look at brakes lines as well.

Crank case breather (have a look and see if its squidgy)

Have a poke at anything on the back of the engine, easy time to change it, ie the coolant thing that rusts out.

any sensors round the back like the G62 coolant one, vac lines to the hardlines, definately the steering damper and check the steering arm carrier for cracks.

Change of gearbox oil while its out...much easier!

Steering rack is a good one to do, but check with Audi if there are any kits left...when i got mine last year there were only 2 left...Other places that supply ZF might be able to get something though

Good question, good replies, great forum.

To all, in all parts of the world reading this thread and all of the others on here, enjoy the weekend, and being able to work on B4s and C4s, including the owners lucky enough to have their cars on the road, and not in pieces on the ground. lol.

I think most bases have been covered. I would just add that its likely you will find as few rusty patches, particularly in the bottom corners of the chassis rails and around the holes in the inner wing where the tie rods pass through, so a good time to have a quick tidy up of those areas.
Worth checking & replacing the rear crank seal while its accessible, every engine I've removed has been weeping, likewise check the clutch & release bearing, slave cylinder etc.

re: the rack, if DIY rebuilding, make sure you get it pressure tested to at least 140 bar as there are dodgy seal batches in circulation
